[comp.periphs.scsi] [MacII] SCSI cabling : Centronics plug?

murphy@hao.hao.ucar.edu (Graham Murphy) (03/16/90)

In an attempt to attach a SCSI tape drive to my mac, I searched
for a cable that would connect the DB25 on my MacII to a
standard SCSI 50 pin. I ended up buying what is described as
a SCSI System Cable, which is a DB25 Male to Male 50 pin Centronics cable.

Does the Centronics fit _anything_ in the SCSI world or should
I just get my money back?

The "Centronics" connector is Alternative 2 in the SCSI standard. I've
seen it used for Apple standalone disk boxes, although DB25 is also used
there sometimes. HP has Winchesters from 100-660 megs, as well as MO
drives and a DAT tape drive that use it for the external cabling. At
least two companies sell Exabytes in boxes that use the connectors.
There are insulation-displacement connectors available that go from
those connectors to ribbon cable. AMP calls this general type of
connector "CHAMP" and Amphenol calls them "Micro-Ribbon".

The 50-pin "Centronics" style connector is also used for SCSI-1 shielded
connections - it sounds like you bought the correct gizmo.

This connector is also referred to as the Amp "Champ" or "low-density shielded
connector".
