we just caught a new Micropolis 1598-15 1.2Gb scsi-drive. our system is SUN 4/370 running Sun OS 4.0.3 the drive is configured to be sd2. we had the disk formatted, but (of course ?) wanted to reformat it using our own format command. the disk was unlabelled, so no way to tell HOW it was formatted... what happened was: --- format> format Ready to format. Formatting cannot be interrupted and takes 17 minutes (estimated). Continue? y Beginning format. The current time is Mon Jun 4 10:21:54 1990 Block 3 (0/0/3), Fatal non-media error (illegal request) failed --- drive specifications tell: unformatted: nhead = 15, pcyl = 1925, bytes/track = 41664 formatted (in 1k format) ncyl = 1922, nsect = 38 formatted (in 512 byte format) ncyl = 1922, nsect = 72 (how does the drive know which format to use ... ?) the format.dat entry we've been trying is: disk_type = "Micropolis 1598-15" \ : ctlr = MD21 \ : ncyl = 1922 : acyl = 2 : pcyl = 1925 : nhead = 15 : nsect = 72 \ : rpm = 3600 : bpt = 41664 so far no luck. any help would be appreciated . -- Jari Salo # The knack of flying Tampere Univ of Technology / Software Systems Lab # is learning how to PO box 527 # Mail: jaffa@tut.fi # throw yourself at the SF-33101 Tampere, Finland # Tel : 358-31-162932 # ground and miss.
