Recently, I got a Seagate SCSI Elite drive and have been very impressed with it. It spins at 5400 RPM and I saw sustained transfers of 2.8 MB/sec on my RS/6000 Model 530. Seek time is 12 ms. It holds 1.5 GB before formatting. I also tested it on an RTPC running the good operating system (4.3 BSD). It did quite well there, but maxed out at about 1.7 MB/Second due to the AT bus, I guess. The only problems are that it is slightly bigger than the standard 5 1/4 inch form factor and it requires extra power and cooling. I had seen one of these new "5 1/4" Seagate drives at a show prior to the time these would be ready to ship. The salesman stated that they get quite hot. (Some allusions to frying eggs). Just how hot are they? Chris T. Hugins chugins@hpcupt1.HP.COM
