[comp.periphs.scsi] Interesting new SCSI drive...

jparnas@larouch.watson.ibm.com (Jacob Parnas) (07/05/90)

Recently, I got a Seagate SCSI Elite drive and have been very impressed with
it. It spins at 5400 RPM and I saw sustained transfers of 2.8 MB/sec
on my RS/6000 Model 530. Seek time is 12 ms. It holds 1.5 GB before
formatting. I also tested it on an RTPC running the good operating
system (4.3 BSD). It did quite well there, but maxed out at about 1.7
MB/Second due to the AT bus, I guess.

The only problems are that it is slightly bigger than the standard
5 1/4 inch form factor and it requires extra power and cooling.

FYI.

I had seen one of these new "5 1/4" Seagate drives at a show prior to
the time these would be ready to ship. The salesman stated that they
get quite hot. (Some allusions to frying eggs). Just how hot are they?
