[comp.periphs.scsi] Adding Integrated SCSI to Sun

mussar@bcars53.uucp (G. Mussar) (07/27/90)

We opened a Sun SCSI Shoe box and found what appears to be a standard SCSI
cable. We tried attaching an integrated SCSI controller/drive to the cable
as a disk at SCSI address 1. The Sun pauses and accesses this disk but it
doesn't appear to recognize it. Does anyone know some magic that can convince
the Sun (BSD Unix) to recognize a modern intergrated controller/drive? Does
Sun do something bizzare with the prehistoric Emulex controller and old
fashion drive? Inquirying minds want to know.

Depending on the SCSI controller board in the SUN you may, or may not
be able to use an embedded SCSI drive.

Our experience has been that the 'sc' controller boards (Sun 2 SCSI)
work with the EMULEX MD21 ESDI-SCSI adaptors, but do not work with
(for example) Micropolis embedded SCSI controllers.

3/50's and 3/60's both *do* work. I believe, though we have not had one
to test, that the Sun 3 SCSI boards also work.

Why? I don't know, but would appreciate it if anyone could shed any light
on it.

You might give a bit more information about this. Like, which Sun machine,
and what OS release.

>More info on Adding Integrated SCSI to Sun

This is a Sun 3/60 running BSD 4.03 Unix. We were attempting to add various
Rodime and Quantum drives. And... we managed to get stuff working.

We were initially testing our integrated drive as SCSI address 2. Our kernel
mapped this to SD4. Unfortunately, the default /etc/format.dat file on our
system only contained SD0 - SD3 in its search path, so the format command
never found our drive. Our local Sun rep. kindly FAXed me some of the 4.03
System Admin manual so I could set up the format.dat in a reasonable fashion.

We still have problems trying to get the Sun to LLF the drive (but we can do
that other ways). The main trick is to get the label written out.
a) Commit a null defect list (the integrated drive has already mapped out the
   defects found by the manufacturer).
b) Set up the disk partition.
c) Write the label.
d) Attempt to format (this always failed for us, but, everything seems to be
   OK).
