Does anybody in netland have any external scsi drives installed and
working on the cube? We have been trying to up the storage capacity on
our cube for a month or so with no success to date. Have tried two
different drives with the same result, scsi errors on boot with the
internal unable to read properly while the external is attached.
The first drive tried was a Seagate/CDC Wren VI, the second being a Maxtor
XT8760S. Both of these drives were useable on a Mac IIcx but the cube
refuses to recognize them. Help from NeXT support has been spotty
at best. The first response was " You need an upgraded motherboard ,
there are some problems with the NCR 53c80 scsi controller chip in the
early production boards". We transported the cube to Oregon State for the
board swap,(to get the 53c80a) the results were the same. The second
response was " the Wren is not a supported mechanism, your on your own."
so it was sent back. We then procured the Maxtor since it is "supported".
The third response was " we push the scsi bus so hard that you must have
a certified scsi cable". NeXT sent us a "blessed" cable to try our luck
with. Of course the results were the same, scsi errors on boot.
The errors read like this:
We were configured as scsi device 2 at this point:
>s0 (2,0) ERROR op: 0x0 sd_state:4 scsi status 0x2
>s0 (2,0) ERROR op: 0x12 sd_state:4 scsi status 0x2
>(repeated for (2,1), (2,2), ... (2,7))
So, there we are. This is turning onto the problem from hell with no end
in sight. Any comments or experience with this scenario would be greatly
appreciated.
Please e-mail responses to myself and I'll summarize to this group.
Thanks much in advance.
