Hello,
We have a Micropolis 1588, (668MB, 16ms) disk we try to get to work with
our Sun SPARCstation 1. Sofar No Luck.
I have a few questions and am hopefull to receive answers from the
net...
The sparse manuals that we received together with the disk give us the
following Configuration Options Table:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Option Option Description Option
Characteristic Code Methodology
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Jumpers at J2
SCSI Device Address ID2 ID1 ID0
1 SCSI ID 0 off off off
2 SCSI ID 1 off off on
3 SCSI ID 2 off on off
4 SCSI ID 3 off on on
5 SCSI ID 4 on off off
6 SCSI ID 5 on off on
7 SCSI ID 6 on on off
8 SCSI ID 7 on on on
Interface Termination Terminator at RN9:
1 Interface Installed
terminated
2 Interface NOT Omitted
terminated
BUS Termination Power Jumper at W1, W2, W11:
1 Drive provides
internal Installed at W1
terminator power
2 Host system Installed at W2
provides internal
term. power
3 Drive provides Installed at W2 and W11
internal and SCSI
bus term power
BUS parity check Jumper at W4
1 Drive generates
parity and has Omitted
parity detection
enabled
2 Drive neither generates
nor detects parity Installed
Spindle control Jumper at W5
1 Motor starts at Omitted
power on
2 Motor starts when
receiving Installed
START UNIT cmd
Frame Ground Jumper at W28
1 Frame ground NOT
connected to logic Omitted
ground
2 Frame gnd connected Installed
to logic gnd.
I have my guesses of various options, but they don't seem to work.
When I boot the Sun it stops during boot, before entering self test
cycles (expect: "testing", received nothing).
We use a SCSI cable with 50 pins Centronix on the Micropolis end and a 50
pins DSUB plug on the Sun end.
Anybody know how the jumpers ought to be set?
Anybody have an entry for this disk for format.dat?
Thanks in advance,

[Couldn't mail this, so I'll post it...] In comp.periphs.scsi you write: >We have a Micropolis 1588, (668MB, 16ms) disk we try to get to work with >our Sun SPARCstation 1. Sofar No Luck. ... >I have my guesses of various options, but they don't seem to work. >When I boot the Sun it stops during boot, before entering self test >cycles (expect: "testing", received nothing). You might try checking the power available at the disk, especially the +5 voltage. If it is marginal, you will see that behavior. >Anybody have an entry for this disk for format.dat? SunOS 4.1 has one, but in my experience it's no good (at least on our Micro 1588-15). I found that (ncyl=1627, acyl=2, pcyl=1632, nhead=15, nsect=53) works well. -- David L.
