[comp.periphs.scsi] What 660MB or 1.2GB hard drive can you recommend?

jfw@neuro (John F. Whitehead) (11/15/90)

I intend to purchase a large hard disk drive -- at least 660MB, or a
1GB drive if I can afford it -- and would like some input as to what
brands/retailers I should look at or avoid.

I have heard of CDC/Imprimis Wren, Micropolis, and Maxtor, which are
in the $3000-$4000 price range for the 1gig variety. Fujitsu has just
come out with one that will be on the cheaper side (despite having
a 5-year warranty). And I believe Micronet makes one, which costs a
bit more than the rest.

Does anyone have recommendations or caveats for drives of this size?
I will be using it for storing digitized sound, so random access seek
time is important, though total throughput while writing is also
important. My biggest concern, though, is data reliability, so I want
to make sure I find a company and retailer I can count on.

Please e-mail and I will summarize.

I would recommend the Fujitsu SCSI drive just because the 5 years warranty.
And after all, the drive is cheaper than other makers.
(Oh no, the Japanese are dumping cheap hard disk into the US market!
Let's call the congressman and execrise their power to stop the Japanese. ;)

Corporate Systems Center 408-737-7312 has Maxtor XT-8760S
(675 Mb) for $1600-$1900, depending on what level of
warranty you want. I've installed one but have not
exercised it fully yet. It seems like a good deal.

HP has 660MB and 1GB drives, price range $2500-$2700 for the former,
$3600+ for the latter. Include 5-year warranties.

Could you give us some more details or tell us how we can a copy of
Computer Hot Line (I have never heard of it).

wren vii's should be quite cheap now, around $2000 for 1.2GB.
$4K would buy you an elite (1.5GB and much faster) but
don't buy one until you can get the in-form factor version.

Where? How?

The problem is that in Germany, local prices look more like $5000... :-(
