[comp.periphs.scsi] SCSI -> floppy adapter

cyliax@ecn.purdue.edu (Ingo Cyliax) (11/26/90)

I'm looking for a SCSI to floppy adapter. I would like to add a 1.44Mb/720Kb
3.5" floppy drive on a machine that only has SCSI. Who makes such an adapter?
Got a used one that you want to get rid of ?

Thanks, -ingo

TEAC makes a 2.88M/1.44M/720K SCSI floppy disk (FD-235JS-401) that I have
purchased and use on an embedded system. The SCSI controller is already
mounted on the drive. It comes with a good manual to describe all of its
characteristics (timing diagrams, jumper positions, etc). It hasn't
given me any problems. However; if you don't have $400 or already have a
floppy then consider an OMTI SCSI controller/interface board that handles
5-1/4, 3-1/2, and 8 inch disk drives. Here's the address for the OMTI
controllers (they might be out of business):

NCR has as SCSI Flexible Disk Drive Controller that mounts to either a 5.25"
or 3.5" standard floppy disk (1.44Mb/720Kb) drive. The controller is based
on the SCSI Standard (CCS) and the Mode Sense/Mode Select command page formats
of the ANSI SCSI-2 Working Draft Proposal.

The controller is called "ADP-20 Flexible Disk Controller" and can be acquired
at: NCR Corporation
       3718 N. Rock Rd.
       Wichita, Kansas 67226
       (316) 636-8000

Hope it works.

SMS was bought by Televideo a little over a year ago. The new address
is:

550 E. Brokaw Rd.
San Jose, CA 95134(?)
(408) 954-8333

Televideo was running the remnants of SMS as a separate subsidiary
for a while, then I think they merged it into the parent company.
I'm not sure of the current status of either the company or their
products. Everyone I knew there who has any sense has gone elsewhere.

Teac makes such an adapter. I have before me a spec sheet on an FC-1 FDD
to SCSI I/F. They also make floppy drives with a SCSI controller built-in.
This is model FD-335HS or FD335JS.

The phone number on the brochure is (213) 726-0303. Good luck!!

And if you can't find one from them, I have a couple of used OMTI
5400 cards... The 5400 lets you hook four LUNs as any combination of ST-506
hard disk (2max), QIC-02 tape (1max) or floppy (4max). The design is old
enough to for the SCSI implementation to be a bit less than fully there,
but at least they do work. :-) $50 each, if you're interested...
