I'd like to add a high-capacity tape drive to my Sun 386i. Has anyone done this? Is there any advantage aside from price of DAT over 8mm? Does the 386i's st driver handle 8mm or do I need a custom driver? A couple of companies I'm looking at: Coperico and Apunix. The latter has source code for a device driver and network backup daemon, but they don't support the 386i since they don't have any in house. Has anyone hacked this driver to work on a 386i? Apunix also provides a 1 year 24-hour exchange warranty. Their price is considerably higher than Coperico's. I'm currently backing up my net (about 1 Gb of disk total) onto QIC-24, using 7 tapes with compression. I do this after hours just before I leave at night so that I don't disrupt work (the tape drive locks the SCSI bus during tape motion), so this means that it takes almost a couple of weeks to do a full backup. I'd rather do a full backup nightly with the 8mm. Please cc your replies to me in case I miss the newsgroup reply. Ken (shiva@well.sf.ca.us)
