[comp.periphs.scsi] ST-1126N, ST-1162N, AHA1542B - any comments ?

blue@techunix.BITNET (Baruch Cochavy) (12/11/90)

I am about to put an AHA1542B SCSI controller into my 386SX system. I am
thinking of using one of the above mentioned drives with it. Maybe
someone with first hand experience with those drives and controller can
comment on the configuration ?

        Thanks in advance,
        Baruch

The ST1126N is/was a CDC drive. It's actually not too bad. I have used it
on a Sun and my dad has one in his PC, so far no problems. I have had
problems with other Seagate SCSI drives though. You mileage may vary.

That's not true. Seagate changed Imprimis's media so that they now use
Seagate media.

as someone from cdc/imprimis said, seagate didn't change anything in the
drives. so its just another label now. a hint, anyway: make sure your
machine's fan keeps the drives cool (especially the big ones), they
dissipate quite some heat. of course one should keep all machines/drives
cool, but those cheapo fans often just don't make it.

BACON@MTUS5.BITNET (Jeffery Bacon) (12/19/90)

IME, tho, the ST1126N is a relatively slow drive. We have some 20 of them
hooked to various sun equipment here. Based on the benchmarks I ran on them,
they're not all that fast, or certainly no faster than the also-prevalent
Quantum 105S's around here, which is not saying much...and our Wren VI's
leave them in the dust.

Sure they're originally CDC products? That's news to me.

Seagate did a two-page spread on this in EE Times a few months after
they bought Imprimis. It was full of buzzwords like "excellence", and
"quality" (used as an adjective). They gave thier media being used in
_all_ thier products (including Wren and Sabre), as being an example of
thier committment to bring costs down and to ensure quality.

does that mean we shouldn't buy those drives anymore?!
did seagate also change the sabre (8") drives?
