I just installed a third SCSI drive (Maxtor 8760S) to a chain containing a CDC Wren IV, a Toshiba MK-156FB, and an Archive Viper 2150S tape. The host adapter is an Adaptec 1542b. When I booted the machien, the controller found drives 0 and 1, and as usual assigned them to drives "C" and "D". Immediately after that, it displayed the message "Your PC is now Stoned!" This message only appeared when booting DOS from a floppy. I guess this must be Adaptec's way of saying I need a special driver in order to access more than 2 scsi drives from DOS. Unfortunately, ESIX won't boot either. hmmm... Last time I added a drive, the boot drive got wiped and I had to re-install. grrr. It means the floppy you booted from was infected with the infamous Stone virus and that in has now installed itself onto your hard disks. > >Unfortunately, ESIX won't boot either. hmmm... Last time I added a >drive, the boot drive got wiped and I had to re-install. grrr. I won't swear to this, but most likely ESIX won't boot because the Stone virus has messed up something on the boot device. If you have some sort of virus killer program, you should try running it, but be advised that it may not take care of the problem, especially as far as ESIX is concerned. Ultimately, you may have to reformat your hard disk and start over. Also, you'll have to check out any floppies you've used since you infected your machine. > >Isn't SCSI Fun! > > >-- > | bill@unixland.uucp > Bill Heiser | heiser@world.std.com (Public Access Unix) >_____________| heiser@sud509.ed.ray.com >| Public Access Unix (508) 653-3848 Scott Bennett, Comm. This is a message which commonly comes from the "stoned" virus on DOS PCs. I suggest you find your favorite anti-viral agent for DOS and run that against the boot diskette... SOON! Yes, you do need a driver to access more than 2 SCSI drives from DOS. -- Karl Denninger - AC Nielsen, Bannockburn IL (708) 317-3285 kdenning@nis.naitc.com "The most dangerous command on any computer is the carriage return." The "Stoned" message sounds quite similar to a message mentioned in an article about DOS/Mac virus programs. Get rid of that DOS diskette. That virus may like to delete things! I doubt if it could manage to play with UNIX devices, but you never know... To verify, get a virus detector like SCAN.EXE by McAffee and Associates. The floppy is the culprit. Throw away the floppy. And check your hard drives. David UCSD dnguyen@ucsd.edu
