[net.followup] Proposed standard for dating periodic publications

[]

John, there is an existing meaning to the dates on most periodicals. As it
was explained to me once (dunno where or by whom) the date on the cover is
THE DATE THAT THE ISSUE SHOULD BE PULLED FROM THE STANDS. This makes it logical
to have the issue that comes Jan 20 be dated Jan 28, etc.

Whether this standard is the most useful possible for those of us not in the
newsstand business is another issue entirely. It isnt. but too many existing
business practices depend on the system as is for change to be very probable.

As Franklin Roosevelt said in a different context, "Sure [Somoza]'s a son-
of-a-bitch, but he's *our* son-of-a-bitch".

Hope this explains, even if it doesnt satisfy.
