[comp.periphs.scsi] Adaptec 4000

mbaker@ucs.adelaide.edu.au (Matthew Baker) (05/28/91)

Hi,

I am looking for some information on an Adaptec 4000 SCSI to MFM
controller board. The PROM is revision date of 1983
The questions are:

1/ There doesn't seem to be a jumper for SCSI id number.
What SCSI id would the unit appear as?

2/ There is an 8 way x 2 jumper on the board that appears
	    as follows

		O M K I G E C A
                . . . . . . . .
                . . . . . . . . J5
                P N L J H F D B

Does anyone know what these jumpers do? One side (a-o)
goes to an 8156, and the other side (b-p) is tied logic high.

Thanks in advance.

The SCSI id jumper is defined by the 8x2 linear block, defined below.

Adaptec ACB-4000 Jumper Definitions:

These jumpers are arranged in two blocks; one is an 8x2 linear block and the
other is a 3x2 T-block.

			A C E G K M O
			B D F H L N P

      T
   S R PU

Jumper Definition Installed Removed
--- --------------------------------- ----- -----
A-B LSB of controller's SCSI Address bit=1 bit=0
C-D Another bit of the SCSI ID bit=1 bit=0
E-F MSB of controller's SCSI ID bit=1 bit=0
G-H DMA Transfer Rate SYSCLOCK/4 DATACLOCK/2
K-L Not Used
M-N Support of Syquest 312, DMA 630 and Enabled Disabled
drives that drop SEEK COMPLETE sig-
        nal during head switching
O-P Self Diagnostics Enabled Disabled

R-PU	Write Precompensation turned off	Enabled Disabled
	for both drives
R-S	Write Precomp starts at same cy-	Enabled Disabled
linder as reduced write current for
	both drives
R-T	Write Precomp is applied to all	Enabled Disabled
	tracks for both drives

And now for *my* questions. Has anyone gotten the ACB-4000 board to work with
a miniscribe 6085 MFM drive? Also, does anyone have a quick and dirty little
first-time format utility written in either unix or dos that will work with
either the adaptec aha-1542a or seagate st-01a scsi controller cards?
