Try moving the 1542 DMA rate to 5.0MB/sec.  Most recent cards go out with the
DMA speed set to 5.7MB/sec.
If this is the only drive in the system and you are not running anything
that puts the 386 into virtual mode, you do not need the ASPI4DOS driver
loaded, so try taking that out and see what happens.
