[comp.periphs.scsi] TEAC FD235JS SCSI Floppy docs

Harvey_Taylor@mindlink.bc.ca (Harvey Taylor) (06/19/91)

You may have noticed my asking for information re the Teac SCSI Floppy
FD-235JS-xxx. The xxx in the name designates the model of FD-235J drive
which the FC-1 controller board is strapped to. I have seen mention of
 300/302/401/650 & I have the 660-U.

Here's the scoop on the docs:

    FC-1 Spec Part number 10530468-01 @ US$20.00
    FD235J-650 Spec Part number 10530403-50 @ US$ 7.00
    FD235HS-300Spec Part number 10530472-02 @ US$ 7.00
    FD235JS- Spec Part number ? @ US$ 7.00

They also want $4.00 shipping & handling per item. My copy of the
FC-1 docs was missing pages & had pages out of order, but there was
enough info there to get the thing working.

    PS.
I was on the SCSI BBS last week to scarf some SCSI-2 specs & came
across this bulletin, which I hope John Lohmeyer won't mind my xposting.

*************************** SCSI-2 Standard Status ***************************

SCSI-2 Rev 10c was approved by ANSI on August 31, 1990, but in December 1990,
X3T9.2 (the committee that developed SCSI-2) asked that SCSI-2 be returned
to the committee for editing prior to publication.

This was a difficult decision for X3T9.2. It is hard to recall your pride
and joy. But recent changes in the ANSI policy (which were retroactively
applied to SCSI-2) regarding changes during final editing left the committee
no easy choice. We could publish the standard with a number of known
defects or we could recall the standard, fix the defects, and return it
for publication after another year of approval process.

The new policy is that no committee-initiated changes will be made after
ANSI approves a standard. ANSI reserves their right to make any changes they
deem appropriate, however. Previously, many editorial clarifications and
corrections from the committee were accepted, provided the committee
asserted that the changes were not substantive (editorial).

This new position stems from ANSI's concern over being sued for permitting
changes without due process.

The current status of SCSI-2 is that ANSI has agreed to return SCSI-2 to the
committee and the committee editors have prepared SCSI-2 revision 10d. This
document was distributed to the committee members in May 1991. Revision 10e
has also been prepared to correct some printing problems that occurred on
Revision 10d. These two documents contain most of the committee changes plus
some of the more than 1000 changes from the ANSI editors.

There will be at least one more revision (10f) before X3T9.2 again forwards
SCSI-2 back through the approval procedures. These procedures include
approval at X3T9.2 and X3T9, a 2-month public review, and X3 approval
before being returned to ANSI for their re-approval. If substantive changes
are made anywhere in the approval process the whole process restarts from
the beginning. (It's amazing that anything the size of SCSI ever gets through
this elaborate process!)

X3 has negotiated a change to the ANSI procedures to help avoid these
problems in the future. On new projects, the ANSI editing will be done
concurrently with the first public review period. This will avoid massive
editing after the standard is approved by ANSI.
                                                                  May 31, 1991
