The following post is for the Company I coop for (work). Please respond to my E-mail adress -the company does not have one. I have several questions concerning the use of DV/386. PROBLEM STATEMENT: I understand that on a 386 based machine, it allows the use of true multitasking (when used w/ QEMM386). Please correct me if I am wrong. I have a very large application which I desire to multitask with MS-Word 5.0 on a 386/sx. The application is called TeleSell, a telemarketing mgt program written in DataFlex. The program is disk intensive and needs approx 512K to run efficiently. My concern is that the DOS file handler must be set to 90 and buffers set to 50 (in the CONFIG.sys). Granted, you probably think this is impossible under DOS, but I have tried it out under different settings and it really makes a difference in the program's operation (DOS 3.3 and 4.0) - something to do wit hthe relational database having many files open while in operation. The program does not support EMS or extended memory but will use as much of the 640K as is available. MS-Word 5.0 is memory intensive and supports EMS. I want to perform mail merge/print as a background task while I return to TeleSell. The machine will bwe dedicated to these two apps, with little more on it than DOS and utilities. Also, an IOMEGA Bernoulli drive will be hanging off the side and requires some memory for system drivers. The only other possible memory usage would be a printer setup utility (small). I wish to somehow multitask TeleSell and Word (and printer utility) to allow for the maximum ram available to TeleSell and minimize the CPU slowdown. QUESTIONS: 1. Will DV allow me to load drivers and other TSRs into ram above the DOS 640K and how much system ram (DOS) does DV occupy? 2. Will DV allow me the memory I need for the file handlers and maximum DOS space? 3. Will DV386 allow true multitasking for background processing as described above? BTW: The machine will have 4MB ram (EMS) and a 40MB drive, running DOS 4.01 with a 40MB partition. I can't seem to find anybody who knows enough about Deskview, so I put my question in the hands of the experts - the people [and hackers] who use it daily. * Also, anybody with a good knowledge of Telemarketing packages is more than welcome to share their knowledge with me - it would be appreciated. NOTE: This system will eventually be networked (probably Novell ELS II). I need something to do "resource logging" to log access and length of time each node accessed a local modem. Any ideas? ALSO, is there anything like LIST.COM for use over a network, or will LIST.COM work properly with the Network OS to deal with file locking. I just want to access (read) a centralized text file. Please E-mail responses, to keep the net from getting cluttered. I'll post anything I think is useful for the general populace. Thanks in advance. - Marc -- LEVINSON,MARC LOUIS Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta Georgia, 30332 uucp: ...!{allegra,amd,hplabs,seismo,ut-ngp}!gatech!prism!gt0159a ARPA: gt0159a@prism.gatech.edu
