Thanks to all who responded to my article. I was unable to reach
most of you via email so hope this less personal THANKS will suffice.
I've recieved two solutions that meet my needs :
o using the National Semiconductor 16550A UART (very compatiable
with 16450 and 8250 ). This UART contains a 16 byte receive FIFO,
a 16 BYTE xmit FIFO, block DMA (on 16550 specific boards), and
more. Looks real nice to me.
o For freeing up your CPU still more, I've heard that a company
named Glacticom in Florida make an intelligent serial card
that contains some amount of on-board buffering. I should
have more information on this in a week or so. This sounds
like the best long term solution, at least for me, and hopefully,
the board will have an EPROM rather than an PROM.
