[comp.sys.ibm.pc.programmer] Borlands Upgrade "Deal"

greg@dekalb.UUCP (Greg Philmon) (06/12/90)

I'm a long-time Borland customer who owns TC 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, TASM 1.0, TD 1.0,
TP 5.0 & 5.5. So recently when their offer for TC++ arrived, I quickly placed
an order for the Professional version (TC++ 1.0, TD 2.0, & TASM 2.0). The
price was $150 + 5 (?) S&H + sales tax.

That was three weeks ago. It still hasn't arrived. Yesterday I was in a local
computer store and saw the same package for $175. So, my "deal" from Borland,
in appreciation of being a long-time loyal customer, is about $20.

But I'd rather spend the $20 and have the software NOW, then save a little
money and wait a month.

Does this bother anyone else?

Actually, Borland doesn't deliberately do stuff like this, but they
do it a *lot*. Horror stories abound, about their disorganization,
and about how unpleasant it is for clerical types to work there. (Presumably
programmers have it somewhat better.) Couple years ago they lost most
of their registration list because a disk died and nobody'd backed it up!

Upgrade fees always bother me. They usually cost *more* than the wholesale
price of the product. So, rather than doing you a favor, the publisher
is actually getting more money than if he just sold it to you.

Anyway, you want some *useful* info, so here it is: call their order desk
(800 331 0877) and ask what's happened to your upgrade. Be polite, but
make sure they know you're perturbed. They'll hand you some BS about
"Oh yes, that order was in batch 23, that'll arrive within the next week."
and after they hang up they'll bump you to the head of the queue. Works
for me.

On the other hand, you could just go the software store, spend that extra
$20, and then when your order finally shows up just refuse to sign for
it. Then again, the UPS guy might leave it with your neighbor....

Is this a typo? I'm also an owner of most of the Borland products you
mentioned (plus some others you didn't mention) and the offer I got for
the Professional version was $125 + $5 S&H. What gives?

I also got the upgrade offer price of 149.95 + 5.00 P&H. My thought is that
since they have your registration on file for the package you own, they price
the Professional package based upon whether you presently own one or not.

E.g. you currently own TurboC Professional, upgrade for $125.00.
You DON'T currently own TurboC Professional, upgrade for $149.95.

Is this what others are finding out?

I "own" Turbo C Professional at work (I got the full upgrade from 1.5)
and I own 1.5 at home. I've recieved two upgrade offers: For work
they offered it to me for $125 plus s&h and tax, Home they offered it to me
for $149.... Since I am going to be moving our product to OS/2 (hence no need
for Turbo C) I am going to "borrow" the upgrade coupon for home...

Nope. I own Turbo Debugger 1.0, and got an upgrade notice for the new version
of TD. When I caled to place my order, the operator asked me if I wanted to
order TC++ Pro instead for $125. I said yes, and its now on its way. The last
version of Turbo C I bought was 1.0 (non-professional version).

Go figure.

In Atlanta, GA, USA, the price of the Turbo C++ package is on
the shelf at $99.95 and Turbo C++ Professional is $169.95.

I looked at my upgrade coupon, and surprise, surprise, surprise.
It was the same price as on the shelf here. So much for buying
an upgrade that wouldn't have yielded me a full set of manuals.
