[ut.dcs.general] mac virus alert at dgp!

flaps@dgp.toronto.edu (Alan J Rosenthal) (02/23/90)

Yes, if you have used the dgp macs recently your own mac floppies are infected,
as are your macs at home. Please get a copy of the public domain Disinfectant
1.6 and disinfect your disks. (Don't use a potentially infected floppy to do
this!)

The virus in question is the WDEF A virus, which is extremely contagious. You
do not have to run an application to infect your disks. It infects the hidden
Desktop file, the file that stores the positions of windows and icons (etc), so
you may find that disinfectant will be unable to disinfect your disks when you
are running MultiFinder. Note also that versions of Disinfectant prior to 1.5
do not detect this virus, nor do any other programs we have!

Viruses seem to be a recurring problem at dgp. We are really fed up with
repeatedly dealing with this easily avoided problem. Please note that
non-dgp-members are prohibited from using the dgp macs at any time, for any
reason. We are prepared to go to whatever lengths are necessary to enforce
this.
