[bit.listserv.politics] Bizarro newsletters and Jimbo's most heinous complaint

DICKSON@HARTFORD.BITNET (Friction and harmony) (02/08/90)

Firstly, to add some political content to this light-hearted Jimbo-ribbing, a
not-really-much-of-a response to Larry's article-posting:

1) it would be *very* easy to find counter-examples to every posting you take
out of that paper. I could relate some from personal experience. I've had
more than one relative from my grandparents' generation tell stories about not
hiring minorities, for no reason other than race. I'd say their business
suffered from it, but it's real hard to hurt a business that's already located
in Gouverneur, NY :). And then there's the Micheal Stewart case in NYC.
Anyway, it's fairly obvious that when a newsletter does nothing more than
take articles about one subject -- in this case, blacks assaulting whites --
and bunches them all together, things are going to look pretty bad. But it
*is* skewed.

2) if statistics show that blacks assault whites more than the other way
around, there are plenty of reasons other than barbarism for this to be so.
Namely, there are more blacks in the underclass; and the underclass is more
likely to turn to violence as an outlet for frustration than somebody who isn't
particularly frustrated.

3) on the other hand, I find it strange that people are upset about the Charles
Stewart case (the racial upset, I mean). If a guy with a bullet in his stomach
walks into a police station, says he was shot by a black man, and then picks a
black man out of a lineup, I find it rather unlikely that anybody would begin
thinking, "Maybe he made it up. Maybe he shot himself." Stewart was scum. I
don't think anybody who believed his story should be blamed.

On a slightly related note, one of the actors from Do the Right Thing is
speaking at Trinity College in Hartford tonight on whether or not the movie
promotes racial violence. I think he's the guy who played Buggin' Out. Sadly,
I can't make it, but if I can get any information on it, I'll post anything
interesting I can get.

Now, for the *real* purpose of this letter:

>> There, you will be able to follow the
>>exploits of various heroes, including those created and written by myself and
>>Gary. S'great fun.

>And me! Don't forget the infamous Scarywoman, and the currently
>growing Dog Thing!

>Gee, a first he doesn't show up to the party, and then...

Hey hey hey! First of all, you dumped Scarywoman into *MY* lap! Secondly, you
haven't written anything about Dog Thing in so long, that I *forgot* about it!
And it's *MY CHARACTER'S* offspring, so it should be that easy for me to
forget!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Jimbo, if you don't write nobody's
gonna remember you're a writer, and nothing you can do can change that! So
what is everybody worried about?!

                                                Most, like, frothily, dudes...

                                                                Bill D.
