[bit.listserv.politics] space program

CARBUCKLE@UMKCVAX1.BITNET (Valentine M. Smith) (02/08/90)

Atlantis is scheduled for a 2/22 launch, that may well be delayed. My beloved
Hubble telescope mission has been moved back from March to April.(This mission
was to have gone in October of the year the Challenger bought the farm)The
reason I'm so excited about it is that conservatively, this telescope is to ex-
pand our knowledge about the universe sevenfold. I'm always curious about the\
the universe, so I've hoped this mission would fly for a long time now. What do
you think?

I remember when challenger blew up. For me it is like the kennedy
assassination of the previous generation. It is sad that many
projects were delayed because of challenger, but they will
eventually be sent out.
The problem I have with NASA now is that they are heavily dependent
on manned missions. We have learned so much from unmanned missions
at a fraction of the cost. Reduce the manned missions to the
goal of permanent stations (in orbit or on the moon). Satellites
should be sent up by rocket not the Shuttle. Also the shuttle itself
is not what is really needed. If I remember the SHuttle was to be
a part of a grander delivery system. But because of budget cutbacks
and changes, the Shuttle was THE program.

NASA needs changes far greater than after Challenger.
Any suggestions?
