[bit.listserv.politics] Trees and CO2

TWEAVER@AUDUCVAX.BITNET (02/13/90)

In addition to Todd's statements about the carbon storage capacity of young
trees (I too read this in paper), the old trees release as much carbon in the
decomposition process as they stored while living. If they don't decompose,
but instead burn, they then give off -- CO2! (Yes, I realize that if the tree
is used, these problems will not occur. :-) )

And while I agree that Alabama is a wonderful buffer between Florida and the
North (going up to 75 here today), a friend claims that its greatest benefit is
keeping Mississippi away from Georgia. (I don't subscribe to this theory, I
hasten to add.)
