[bit.listserv.big-lan] Inexpensive Printservice for DEC-PCSA

veneman@cft.philips.nl (jaap veneman corp com) (03/19/91)

We have a PCSA based LAN in operation with a fastly growing
number of PC's connected to it. Offering shared network printers
to user groups is presently by connecting printers to an eight
port terminal server, using serial cabling. This solution requires
an additional serial cabling system in our buildings to be
able to move printers and add printers to the network in a flexible
way. Unfortunately this is not the case in some of our buildings,
user groups have strong requirements for a cheap printserver or
LAT terminal server or lowcost PC based printserver connected to
Ethernet. Example is a manager who want his printoutput of his
PC redirected to a LAN shared printer in the secretariat office.

Has any one a recommendation for a low cost printserver functionality
in a DEC PCSA environment.

This functionality is included in PCSA V4.0, where reverse LAT is used
to access a PC printer.

Hewlet Packard has just released a new model of it's Laserjet III line
specifially designed for multi-user and network use. You can get it with
an ETHERNET card built in .. making it attachable direclty to the network
without use of a DECSERVER (or any other terminal server) I dont know it's
compatibility with PCSA (it'd be nice to find out, since that's the net OS
we use here too.) but I'm sure you can find out from HP.
