JP, your poll was VERY interesting. So much so that it set a little bell off in the recesses of my mind. What caught my attention was the 26% listed for Poland. I am not sure of this, and perhaps you can correct me if I am wrong. However, I seem to remember that prior to WWII German territory extended into what is now Poland. As I remember, Poland was given German lands when the USSR grabbed the eastern part of Poland. In effect, much of Poland was shifted west. If this is true, perhaps the Polish people are afraid a new Germany will try and reclaim its historical lands. Do you suppose this is what the German chancellor was speaking about?

Prussia originally extended from what is now the Polish/German border up the coast of the Baltic and through the states of Lithuania, Latvia. and Estonia. The German state which originally occupied the territory which we think of as Prussia was Brandenburg (hence the gate in Berlin). The hereditary seat of the Prussian kings was Koenigsburg, now known by the melodious name of Kaliningrad. There were German universities in the eastern marches of Prussia, notably at Dorpat (now Talin). The city of Gdansk was, since medieval times, a German city-state named Danzig. The present Polish state is an artifice carved from the original german territory by Woodrow Wilson and his wicked fellow victors at Versailles in 1920. This is one of the greatest injustices of modern times. Leonard Abbey Georgia Tech Research Institute labbey@gtri01.gatech.edu
