[bit.listserv.emusic-l] LPC, Charles Dodge, and Mangling Stuff Beyond Recognition

XRJDM@SCFVM.BITNET (Joe McMahon) (02/10/90)

I've heard a number of Charles Dodge's pieces now - last stuff I remember
was back in '79, when he was just starting to use LPC at Bell Labs. Great
stuff. The synthetic voice was reading poetry -- the overall effect was
hysterically funny (intentionally, I'm sure).

This was paired with a piece by Richard Trythall called "Ommagio a
Jerry Lee Lewis", which uses "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" as its
source material. Smae idea, but a low-tech implemetation with filters,
variable speed tape recorders, and a lot of editing.

I think those are still in print; they're a great way to clear out the
cobwebs in the cranium (and they really freak people out when you
listen to them in the car with the windows down!).

Oh yeah, and there's another one from Dodge called (I think) "(working title
deleted)", which uses an old recording of Caruso singing "Vesti la giubba"
(pardon my Italian spelling) as source. I haven't heard this one, but I'd
bet it's just as bizarre and probably even better.

That's "speech songs" by Charles Dodge, I believe, Joe. "A man sitting
in the cafeteria had one enormous ear and one tiny one. Which was fake?"
Sick, twisted stuff, but a lot more fun to listen to than Luciano Berio
and Cathy Berberian (shiver).

Speaking of Paul Lansky, did anyone catch the review of his piece,
"notjust idlechatter" in KEYBOARD? He got SLAMMED!
