Anybody out there know what sort of electronic drums I'm likely to be hearing
on a technopop record dated 1984 ("Love Life" by Berlin, to be specific)?
There are some really nice, meaty toms here and there (check out the tracks
"Dancing In Berlin" or "Now It's My Turn" if you happen to have the album)
that don't sound like any drum machine I've heard. My guess is that they're
old Simmons, but I don't really know. I'd like to find out so as to pursue
the beasts, sampler in hand...

There wasn't a lot to choose from in '84. Simmons were the hip instruments to own then, so SDSv or SDS7s are my guess. Failing that, there are also the Cano Modulus drums and the Tama Techstars, both INCREDIBLY hip analog drum synths. If you ever see an old Tama techstar unit offering two pads and a rackmount brain with "CLAPS" and "SYNTH", buy it. Buy buy BUY! Ditto for the Cano Gravitom. They're both very easy to use, powerful analog synths for pitched and unpitched percussion sounds, with LFOs, ring mod, oh drool, oh yum.... And for those of you with less cash, the Roland PC2 has many of the same feature at a very low usedx price. I got mine for about $20, and it's worth a lot mor e tme than that.... metlay
