>> I managed to borrow one and sampled all the drums :-> > >What kind of sampler do you have? I just got a Roland S-330 and think >it is great? What do these drums sound like? > >David I have the S-330. It is impressive. When I first bought it I did a fully arranged cover version of the Olympic tune 'Hand in hand' on it ... using the Techno Set disk with Drums, SynBass, Choir, Bells, Lead Guitar, etc ... it never ran out of polyphony ! I dumped my MT-32 straight away. (Jeff Beer is probably going to tell me sampled sounds are flat --- but how much would I have to spend to get so many sounds from individual synths ?) The drums off the Sheffied drum record are of course ** REAL **, but they won't blow your top off because they are also DRY, no reverb, no exciters, nothing. When used in your home recording they don't stand out like the Korg M1 or the Roland R8 sounds. But they are genuine (the bottom tom rings for 2 secs). I play them with my Simmons kit to replace a real kit in live gigs cuz' I really cannot keep a real kit in college. >Anybody out there know what sort of electronic drums I'm likely to be hearing >on a technopop record dated 1984 ("Love Life" by Berlin, to be specific)? >There are some really nice, meaty toms here and there (check out the tracks >"Dancing In Berlin" or "Now It's My Turn" if you happen to have the album) >that don't sound like any drum machine I've heard. My guess is that they're >old Simmons, but I don't really know. I'd like to find out so as to pursue >the beasts, sampler in hand... >--Adam I have owned the Simmons SDS-V (Analog) and SDS-5 (hybrid) kits and I keep all the Simmons sound on S-330 format, if you have the S-330 I can distribute these sounds around. Has anyone actually tried using an R-5 with pads as a live substitute for real drums in a gig? That's what I'm using and I'm interested in other people's experiences.
