Ornette Coleman has "New York Is Now" and "Love Call" reissued on CD!!
"New York" I have on tape, but it has never really made an impression on me.
But Love Call has been one of my fav Ornettes through the years. Recorded in
1968, it features ELVIN JONES and JIMMY GARISSON, who were the drums and bass
of the classic Coletrane Quartet. So this is your chance to hear
Elvin with Ornette. Trane's normally didn't play tunes with tempos as fast as
on this record, so Elvin's ride cymbal feel is different than one
would characterize as the Elvin Jones sound. It is lighter, and pushes
a bit, a la Tony Williams. Nor is he as dominating as with Trane, because
Ornette changes direction so much, Elvin would have been lost in the shuffle.
Jimmy also adds a push, with a very forward moving bass lines and
unpredictable syncopated skips. Dewey Redman's presence is also felt.

There are some additional takes included, plus a version of the ballad
"Just For You".

And the sound is GREAT! The sound quality of the original LP was horrible,
it is amazing how much they turned the sound around. It is now quiet and
natural.

I was always wondering if they would ever reissue this because it was never
one of his most popular recordings. Yet it has some of his most interesting
tunes such as Check Out Time and Open To the Public. Hopefully after
the current increase of people recording Ornette's tunes by Metheny,
Zorn, and others, (Jaco Pastorius always used to do bass solos on Broadway
Blues, which is on "New York Is Now") more people will discover these
performances.

So check it out! Jeff Beer

Tony Williams has his own set of signature Sabian cymbals now. Must be
like those Zildjian K Jazz Rides and such...
