An open roll is a roll that is not closed. --Talking Drum No, but really, I think it has a lot to do with the "tightness" or "looseness" of the roll . . . that is, how precise it is. I think. But don't quote me. It's been years since I had formal training. --me

Open rolls - Rudimental rolls, the kind you hear in drum corps, etc... Close rolls - Concert rolls, buzz rolls. Real tight "closed!" - Drummer -
