[bit.listserv.allmusic] Open & Closed rolls?

KRENTZ_MIC@CTSTATEU.BITNET (Micki 'KRAZY' Krentz) (02/06/90)

I'm clueless (what else is new?). One of you drummers
please elaborate for me.

An open roll is a roll that is not closed.

No, but really, I think it has a lot to do with the "tightness" or "looseness"
of the roll . . . that is, how precise it is. I think. But don't quote me.
It's been years since I had formal training.

Open rolls - Rudimental rolls, the kind you hear in drum corps, etc...

Close rolls - Concert rolls, buzz rolls. Real tight "closed!"
