What?? Rush postings, and no word from Drummer yet? :) I'll take advantage of the situation (although I'll probably regret it come Monday when Drummer returns from his weekend home, maybe?), and spew forth a few thoughts on Rush... By-tor: I agree with you on the old Rush vs. new Rush. I don't have any problems with them personally, or them as musicians, but the material that they have written of late is in my eyes (ears?) not nearly as strong as the older stuff (older meaning pre-_Signals_ ). I wonder if maybe they have just run out of ideas. Maybe it's just me... I liked the old Rush sound, where heavily-chorused electric guitar, along with healthy helpings of Rickenbacker bass, filled out the sound, instead of all this digital synth-workstation-gee -whiz techno-sounding stuff. I don't have anything against synths, either... but they just don't deserve to play such a hefty role in this band, not when you have such a capable rhythm guitar handy. Before you say that I'm not a fan... I've seen Rush in concert *five* times, starting with the _Farewell to Kings_ tour. I just don't think I could walk away from one of their shows today, after paying $16 - $20 for a seat, and be satisfied. Overseer & Talking Drum: Wow... someone else (TD) likes the 2nd side of _Hemispheres_?? I used to grab the guitar and play "La Villa Strangiato" almost every day after school... it took me many hours of practice to tackle it, too. I think I'll try to remember how the parts go together and give it a whirl tomorrow. Mike Rosen: You must have read my mind, man... I was just gonna ask about that _She's Having A Baby_ soundtrack! I've never gotten around to seeing the movie (it *is* on vid now, huh?), but I'd heard that XTC had a cut on it, so I was planning on seeing if I could get a copy somewhere. Speaking of sound- tracks, I've seen _Pretty in Pink_ about 4-5 times, and have yet to hear the Suzanne Vega tune in it. That is, as they say... ... *that*. "n.n."

What do you mean when he returns on Monday? I never left! Another Saturday night and I am home... Sheesh... No gigs! Don't ever listen to the weather guesser when you are trying to decide if you should go out. He ruins your evenings... Since we were talking about Toto... We WERE talking about Toto, right? - Drummer -

Recently one of my friends asked me why everyone was going nuts over Toto. I began wondering the same. I likem and think they're cool, but they seem like just normal mundane popular Rock. Am I missing something? also: Hold the line--what album is it off of? Is it a good album? Africa--see above. Jeff Porcaro (I'll bet $5.00 I spelled it wrong) grooves. --tawking drum

La Villa Strangiato? That song absolutely kicks! I figured out the drum line because it sounds almost the same in parts as the drum line in Cinema Show by Genesis (off Seconds Out--1976, Selling England by the Pound--1973 (?), and In the Cage medley off Three Sides Live--19something) only you have to play sixteenth notes on the hi-hat instead of quarters. Anyone know what time signature either of those songs are in? Sounds like 7/8 but now that I think about it Strangiato sounds more like 4/4 (Highly syncopated). Maybe I stuck an extra beat in there somewhere . . . But that's not why I wrote in. I wanted to tell you about this bass player friend of mine who decided to learn the bass line one day and did. In one day. I hate people who can do that. this is the same guy who learned all of side one of 2112 in less than 12 hours. --the talking drum

"She's Having A Baby" is a pretty good soundtrack. I especially like the SHE side. If you all haven't heard it, take a listen.

Since we were talking about toto (or was starting one -) I would like to make comment that Toto 4 was almost the first real record I bought. I got it for christmas instead and bought synchronicity. I don't listen to it ever because my parents bought it for me on a record format and 1) I didn't get my own turntable for more than 3 years after, and 2) my current turntable is in another state, with my albums, and the connection between the tape and the turntable (for dubbing) has gone wierd on me. The synchronicity tape, however, is still played fairly often by me. I don't know what that means. _______/||Domino dave r1se@sdsumus.bitnet "We jammin' I want to jam it with you We jammin' I hope you like jammin' too"

Yeah, it's a great soundtrack. Next time I'm in my room I'll get the tape out and type up what's on it.. Dave Wakeling does the title song, "She's Having a Baby," real cool song. And, if you haven't seen the movie, I recommend it, it' s real funny.. One scene that sticks out is when he puts his coffee mug on her huge stomach.. Mike

africa is off toto 4. I'd bet my life on it. (of course, you could just look it up when you go to the record store next) _______/||Domino dave r1se@sdsumus.bitnet "Some like to believe in the freedom of music But glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrety"

You spelled Jeff Porcaro right. Africa is off of Toto IV and Hold the Line is off of Toto (First album). Personally, I like them all. The first Toto album is WAY ahead of its time. Hey, what can I say? They are all just super killer musicians... - Drummer -
