[bit.listserv.allmusic] Peart and others

) (02/07/90)

Ya know, it could go on forever... Drummer saying how Peart is the pity of
drumming and how the Smithereens are god-like... OK thats fine, because not
everyone likes the same thing, although I think Drummers Peart bashing is at
the least very immature and is not the true spirit of many drummers today...
I have been playing for a little over a year and my number one inspiration is
Peart, although I have not stayed so closed minded as to other drumming
greats in music today... drummers such as Dave Weckl, Chad Wackerman, and the
hosts of others that influence and play in todays music... I think its safe to
say that not everyone likes the same thing... but is that any reason to go
bashing an artist who is so much an influence today? I just had to get this
off of my chest because the way drummer talks is as though he is the premier
artist in todays music... BTW drummer, how many record contracts did you say
you have?

Rob--
I think drummer's Peart-bashing is hysterical. And I think Neil Peart is great.
It could be worse . . . e.g.: New kids on the block bashing and G'n'R bashi
   ng
were a bit out of hand . . .

Record contracts do not show a drummer's talent. Get real. Only a fool
will believe that, and if you do, you are a fool. I never said the Smithereens
were God like. Neil is a bum. The only reason that people think Neil is so
great is because they can't grasp the technical density of Vinnie or Dave or
Jeff. Most of you don't rate drummers on the drummer, you rate it on the band.
If Vinnie played with Rush, you would all want to lick his boots.

Drummer... thats false... there is no way I would (and I think its safe to
say all the other Rush fanatics here would) want any other drummer besides
Peart with Rush... The three work together as a perfect team...

And your comment about (quoted) "The only reason that people think Neil is so
great is because they can't grasp the technical density..." OK I am not saying
Vinnie and Dave ARENT great as a matter of fact they are greats in drumming
today, and I am sure once again the Modern Drummer readers poll will prove
that.. but I also say you will see Neil in that poll as many also think he is
a great.. Neil himself admits it has taken him 20 years to reach a point
where he is comfortable... Do you think Pearts playing isnt very technical...
Hmmm... interesting, but I suppose when a rock drummer leaves those basic beats
behind and adds more flavor by introudcing more complex beats that must mean
he is a bum because he "broke the rules"... now obviously that is a very
ridiculous statement... For a rock drummer, Neil sets standards many drummers
try to match... that never implies he is the best or he is perfect, it just
implies that he is extermely good at what he does although there are drummers
who play more on the technical side than Peart, but I dont think they would
fit with Rush...

And about my record contract statement... I didnt mean that in such a broad
sense, although I suppose it ended up looking like that... but what I am
saying is would Rush have made it so far, been around so long if people did
not admire there work as a band (and I know many people who listen to Rush
because of Peart)... I guess *you* are impling that we are all stupid because
we dont understand other drummers techinical proficincy, therefore we all run
out for Pearts beats... come on get real...

As a closing (will this Peart bashing by drummer ever close?)... I can totally
understand a person not liking an artist, for whatever reason... afterall, not
everyone likes the same thing... however to say one of the late 70's, 80's and
now 90's most respected drummer is a bum... thats a big statement... and your
reasoning behind him being a bum goes way against what most people think...
remember he is one of the most respected drummers within the pages of Modern
Drummer... along with Vinnie, and Dave the score of others who any drummer
without tunnel vision would also want to follow...
