Gotta a question for By-tor or anyone else on the list, on `Fly By Night'
By-tor was the prince of darkness who was defeated by the Snow Dog and sent
back to the depths of Hell. But he returns on 'Caress of Steel' in 'The
Necromancer' as the hero who battles the necromancer and defeats him to save
the land. So is By-tor evil or good? Or did he see the evils of his ways and
get saved, or what? This has been bothering me since 1975, so if anyone knows
why the change in heart all of a sudden, let me know please 8-)!!

Suzanne, I know exactly how you feel!

Well, correct me if I am wrong, but don't they praise the Necromancer at
the end of the song???

Rando,
I think that By-tor is perhaps a tragic hero...
or locked in a complex internal struggle...There is a special
term (in literature) for that but I can't remeber.....

yo, rando, I always assumed that the snowdog was good and that
by-tor was the baddie.

Yeah, funny you should ask that. I've got a taped interview of Geddy Lee
where someone called in and asked him that exact question concerning By-tor,
and he gave the second answer you had- he saw the evil of his ways and
repented. It sounded like it was stated sort of tongue-in-cheek, so I have come
to the conclusion that they wanted to keep the character for whatever reason,
but didn't want the evil persona past the first story. He didn't really
elaborate too much, so maybe there are other reasons associated with it. Ask
him for me the next time you see him. :)
