Good, the  Ornette thing got through.  The distribution  seems slugish
lately.   As for Jaco, what did he do?   He just played the bass well.
Why?  Because he could!   He was also able to get a GREAT sound, and
the trick of where he plays overtones is well known, but he used it
well.  He used some of the delay loops that where  available in the late
70s, so he could play over his own vamps.  Harmonically he didn't do anything
new, but he had his own style, his playing had its own personality.  He also
was able to play roles that bass players were not used to playing.
You might say he took the job of the lead guitar and gave it to the bass.
Playing with Weather Report certainly helps, because if you do that in
some bands, you will throw the drummer or keyboardist or singer out at
2nd base (bass).   But not Joe Zawinal.

He also played drums on occasion.
