[bit.listserv.allmusic] Jesus and Mary Chain

HALLRL@MOREKYPR.BITNET (02/22/90)

I've got a chance to see the Jesus and Mary Chain and Nine Inch Nails at the
University of Kentucky, my problem is that I know very little about either
band. Could somebody please tell me a little bit about these two bands, I
would like to know something about the bands before I go to see them, Thanx!

Also if anyone is interested, the Sugarcubes are going to be at Bogarts in
Cincinnati OH on March 4th, I can't wait to see that one, from what everyone
has said about their live performances they should be great!

Well, let's see what I can do to help...

J&MC is a sort of new wave band with lots of feedback... perhaps
somewhat similar to early Love & Rockets (though with more distortion
and such) or thereabouts. I've heard very little of their work, but
their debut (*Psychocandy*) got lots and lots of attention, I believe
even including a write-up in TIME Magazine. They've had a few albums
since then, and I believe the distortion level and noise level al-
together has dropped... from the track I keep hearing from their
latest album (*Automatic*), it seems as if they've turned into a more
mainstream progressive band... a good but not terribly original sound.

Nine Inch Nails is a much newer band; their debut is still
around and making waves. Or rather, I should say, HIS debut...
the group is basically a one man band. The music, from the
tracks I've heard, is basically on the progressive/industrial
border : dissonant and noisy at times, but with an overall structure
that's more musical than most industrial music is. Apparently
the album (*Pretty Hate Machine*) is, to put it lightly, a bit
depressing...

It sounds like it should be an interesting show, in my opinion.

Yo, rando, Nine-Inch Nails is a one man band from the iron belt
who was a classically trained pianist or something. He wanted to
get a band together after being a studio musician for a while, but
he couldn't, so he decided to do it himself. Could you tell us (ME)
about the show?

I disagree that Nine Inch Nails' debut album is depressing. I mean,
how can you get depressed with lyrics like,"I'm begging for the
sun and the moon and the stars while the devil wants to f*ck me in
the back of his car"?.
