[bit.listserv.ethics-l] Access to Education

WHMurray@DOCKMASTER.NCSC.MIL (02/09/90)

Anne Cole of SUNY makes an error common to pedants and students when she
equates education to schooling and the cost of the former as a barrier
to the latter. She may or may not err further when she sees the cost
barrier to schooling as related to the genesis of the "underclass."

The genesis of a "class" of people that are unable to participate fully
in our modern, information-based economy is a complex and serious issue.
Cole does no one any favor when she trivializes it to make another point.

A discussion of the issue would be valuable. Many of the participants
on this list would, no doubt, like to participate. Still it does seem
to stretch the issue of computer-related ethics somewhat. That having
been said, I found the error so offensive that I could not resist
responding. Perhaps, if Ms. Cole would contact me by private email, we
can pursue this issue off the list.
