On March 22, Richard O'Barry is coming to Penn State. Ric used to train the
dolphins used for the 1950's television show "Flipper". Ric is the founder
of The Dolphin Project which is dedicated to the well being of dolphins
not only in captivity but also being used by the Navy and being slaughtered
by the tuna boats in California. The tuna boats along are allowed to kill
20,500 dolphins a year before they are required to dock. In his talk Ric is
going to show a hour video taken by Sam Lebuddy. Sam snuck on a boat and got a
job as a cooks' helper. Ric also is bringing videos of his succes at the
successful readaptation of Jo and Rosie. Jo and Rosie are dolphins that were
used for communication research by Dr John Lily and his wife. They were
out of funds for the research project and therefore decided to return them to
the wild. Another aspect that Ric is going to talk about is the marine mammal
amusement parks. He is against the enslavement of dolphins in these places.
Over the Christmas Break (sometime in late December), Ric was arrested for the
first time since Earth Day 1 in 1970. He jumped in the water with dolphins
that were captured in Florida for transportation to the Baltimore death
aquarium. At present these dolphins are feeling the effects of being captured
and are in deep danger. They may not live much longer. The sadness is that
the general public have been bouhgt out by these marine mammal amusement parks
and are not aware of the abuse these dolphin endure. I encourage everyone that
can to come Penn State during the week of March 19. There will be many
talks and chances to learn more about the wonderful dolphin.
