WAKE UP BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Unfortunately it is true that most programmers, adp-planners, project leaders, etc. do not really think how their programs, systems and projects affect the environment. All they do think is how their programs could execute faster, how their adp-systems could become even more efficient and how the projects could give most benefit to the organization. All they think about is efficiency, productivity and money. Someone may argue that he/she (mostly he) does his/her work because it is so "nice to do what one wants to". And they really do believe so. But after all, how many of us can really enjoy one's work? All we think is how much money we make, how many productive and effective projects we have lead through and how we could make even more money. People do not listen to themselves. They do not realize that when they have stress, suffer from insomnia, have headache etc., it's because they're not happy with their lives. They may even realize that yes, I'm not happy with my work or with my life. But this does not help at all, because after that they only try to make even more money and to be even more productive and efficient in their jobs. And this merry-go-round goes round and round and round. We need a thorough change in our thinking and in our values. We have to grow up and realize that one can not measure happiness, life or anything else with money. Greediness and the hunger for power only lead to self-destruction. When we realize that money itself means nothing, we have come closer to a better way of life. What do we do with all our money, cars, furs, jewellerys, swimming pools, slalom equipments, tennis courts and with all the other crap if Mother Nature gives up? Jorma Ronkainen

Hi all, My name is Erez Zadok and I just subscribed to this list. A friend of mine mailed me a copy of this last article, titled "WAKE UP LITTLE PEOPLE" which I found very interesting. In fact, this article and list came right on time. I'm currently enrolled in a course here at Columbia U. called "Technology & Society" taught by professor Stephen Unger. I like the course and subject greately, and may I add that I'm a CS major. Well, I have to write a paper for that class and the subject I like to discuss is outcome of software on society and/or environment, and the responsibilty of programmers in their jobs. There must have been lots of such discussion about this subject, and if not, lets start one. I want to know your opinions, and especially would like to hear about real cases of software doing harmful things to society or the environment. Do you know of cases that have gotten to courts? Thank You. Erez. BTW, feel free to email me personally anything of any size that you want (no code dumps of your kernel please... :-) A wank's morning starts one machine | Arpa: ezk@cunixf.cc.columbia.edu clock cycle after midnight. | Usenet: rutgers!columbia!cunixf!ezk - HebrewWank #1 | Bitnet: ezk@cunixf, erzus@cuvmb
