Use of a compression scheme like this could make the network a more
efficient medium. However, isn't the ZIP format a more popular choice
these days, in light of recent litigation?

I just finished adding the ARC format to LISTEARN. Users requesting
software or archives from LISTSERV@TREARN are recommended to request their
files via the new format to speed up delivery and reduce network load,
especially for lengthy files. To use, append f=arc at the end of your 'GET'
or GIVE command. To decode the received file, you need a compatible archive
manager, such as VMARC for VM systems.

My special thanks to John S. Fisher <FISHER@RPIECS> for the permission to
use VMARC with LISTEARN. His program can be obtained via GET VMARC PACKAGE
from LISTSERV@RPIECS. Regards, -turgut
