I posted this note to NOTMUS-L (NOTIS Music Library Users list) and received only two comments. I'd like to post it to NOTIS-L to see if NOTIS-L readers can identify additional problems. The problem is familiar: how to deal with circulation status and linked items records for items that are represented in NOTIS with more than one bibliographic record. Since NOTIS K/B searching allows for searching by the record ID, the note to OPAC readers (FOR CIRCULATION STATUS, TYPE: K=ABC1234) seems fairly clear. On the other hand, I am still not sure what the consequences are for "blanking" out the CIRCULATION INFORMATION NOT AVAILABLE in L*** note for those records that do not have linked item records. What do OPAC readers do when they encounter that "not available" note? Would they do anything different if that note was not present on bib records that did not have linked item records? Would the elimination (or "blanking") cause problems? I would really appreciate hearing from sites that have circulation in operation who also have the CIRC INFO NOT AVAIL.. note. Thanks in advance. --Ralph Papakhian ----------------------------Original message---------------------------- After much gnashing of teeth, we have come up with the following potential solution to the "with" problem. It assumes general availability of K/B searching at the installation: The linked item record with barcode will be linked to the main record (the first of the "with"s or the set for the M3's). The secondary bibliographic records would have no linked item records, but would have copy holdings (and volume holdings). In the copy holdings record of these secondary bibliographic records, post a universal message: FOR CIRCULATION STATUS, TYPE: k=abc1234 (i.e. the NOTIS record number for the main bibliographic record with the linked item record(s)) This would also mean blanking out the familiar: CIRCULATION INFORMATION NOT AVAILABLE IN L... (it appears this blanking out is possible). We have tested this (except the blanking out part) and it seems to be workable. The user is instructed to type k=<notis id> and retrieves the one record with circulation information. My question to more experienced NOTIS users is: are there problems that we are overlooking with this procedure? Once CIRC has been implemented, is there really any need for the CIRCULATION INFORMATION NOT AVAILABLE ... note? My impression is that a blank line is just as useful as that note. Comments please. We are anxious to get a resolution to this problem so that we can procede with our work. Many thanks in advance, and Most sincerely, ##### @@@@ ### @@@@ MUSIC @@ ### @@ A.
