I'm looking for someone who's experienced the automatic ODD leading feature of PM. We are working on a 2-column, multi-page document, where some of the lines are being (automatcally) leaded incorrectly, yielding more space than it seems is required. After consulting with University Publications (and getting the response--"PM simply has a mind of its own sometimes...we haven't been able to find a fix..."), i decided that it was time to seek the advice of the "PM pros." Instead of using the "auto" leading feature of the type size, try specifying the leading that you would like to use, ie. font size 9pt, leading 10pt. re: odd autoleading in PageMaker Try setting a numerical leading rather than using autoleading and see if you still have the problem. I never use the autoleading except when I'm doing a one-line headline and I've never seen the problem you described EXCEPT when running Adobe Type Manager. ATM allows you the option of checking "preserve character shapes" or "preserve linespacing." If you "preserve character shapes," ATM seems to affect on-screen leading; I don't know what it does to printed copy.

I have not had a problem with "automatic incorrect leading", but it occurs to me you might be sometimes using the "top of caps" method and sometimes the "proportional" method of line spacing. You can change between these on the "type spacing" menu item. (This is on a Mac; I don't know about the PC version of PM.) This is just a shot in the dark...
