STONEC@IUBACS.BITNET (SO YOU USE PAGEMAKR TOO...) (02/06/90)
Now that we've all learned everything we would ever want to know about pitch and point, can we try a new topic? Has anyone else had trouble with ASCII text using PageMaker on a pc? When other people give me ascii text to place in pagemaker, I end up with all their hard returns in the middle of my pagemaker column! They're a pain, and I have to take them all out by hand (since PM has no search/replace). So for months I've brought them into WordPerfect (stripped the hard returns) and reformatted for PM. Then in January I read in the new Aldus magazine, that there's a smart ascii filter! I'm about to get my hands on it from another PM user. Will this solve my problem and remove hard returns? Has anyone else used the filter? For those of you who use ascii and haven't got a filter what do you do when placing text in PM? Back to bullets for a minute now -- has anyone had success in using bullets with the control shift 8 method in point sizes larger than 10 or 12? I would like to use this bullet shortcut, but I want them bigger than the text I'm working with. When I highlight the bullet, and increase just the bullet's point size they don't change size whenrinted. And I hate drawing 20 med. size bullets with the circle tool and lining all those suckers up Any ideas? --------------------- Now here's a tip for the day: When printing final pages for reproduction that contain a lot of solid blacks, you might spray the pages with artist's matte fixative similar to hair spray I've been told. This will darken your blacks when printed. Also, If you aren't using it already, you should check out the new laser printer paper (fairly inexpensive). Hammermill, for ex- ample, makes Hammermill Laser Plus which helps give better quality toner on your final print out. ************************************************************************** Cindy Stone, Training & Communications Specialist ___ II ___ Department of Physical Plant U II U Indiana University - Bloomington U II U U II U UUUIIUUUU (Home of Bobby Knight and the Hurryin' Hoosiers, but II I'd hate to admit such a tyrant, but brilliant coach, II works at the same school I do...) re the recent queries about ASCII import into PageMaker [No I won't leave the MAC users in peace, because a) Most of us are probably DO anyway ;-), and, b) The problem applies to MAC PM anyway.] We do a LOT of ASCII importing. There is a separately orderable set of filters & drivers ("PageMaker 3.0 Filter/Driver Pack 1.0). It allows WP5 import, and also gives you "SMART ASCII", which is much better than the default ASCII import. I believe the disk & instructions were cheap (sorry, can't remember prices). Call the tech support/ordering number, give the title above, and good luck. /PJ SofPJF@VM.UoGuelph.Ca ------------------------------- There is never time to do it right, but plenty of time to do it over...
