Hi everyone: I wanted to send out an explanation about some of the postings you have been receiving on STORM-L and STORM-W lately. Charley Kline has come up with a way for certain products to be automatically queued for distribution thus cutting out the middle-man (me !). STORM-L was designed as a forum for discussing weather-related topics. It also allowed the distribution of NWS products. I've tried to balance what is sent over STORM-L to be of interest to everyone in the U.S. and tried to keep updates and local weather products to a minimum since I understand that not everyone has the same interest in weather (both scientifically and geographically). I'd like to solicit some comments about the autofeeding of weather. For seed, I'd suggest coded products (abbreviated) should be kept off STORM-L. Non-time-specific products like the National Weather Summary should continue, however, mixed case conversion may not be possible -- or may not be 100% accurate (if automatically converted). For STORM-W, I wouldn't mind seeing all the tornado and severe thunderstorm watches (averages about 500 - 700 products per year), and all tornado warnings. I'd say add the severe thunderstorm warnings but these are issued so often that I know people would eventually get tired of them. People on Internet will get these products fairly quickly but BITNET'ers and people on other nets may see quite a delay so I'd hate to flood STORM-W with too many time-specific products. We could send out the AC (severe weather outlook) on STORM-W in it's raw form and I could still send out a decoded version on STORM-L. One final idea, I haven't researched it though, would be setting up some semi-regional lists (like STORM-E, STORM-W, STORM-N, STORM-S) and limit products by region. That way people could subscribe to the weather region of their choice (more or less). If such a list service were started I'd probably have the logging eliminated or reduced so that the LISTSERV disk wouldn't fill up. Well there's food for thought. If you have any comments please send them to me or to STORM-L (whichever is more appropriate). Thanks. ...Chris... --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chris Novy - WA9V BITNET: axvsccn@uicvmc Southern Illinois Univ. Chris - I'd like to see regional stuff available, although I enjoy seeing the new highs and lows all around the country. For time reasons, my desire to read about tornado warnings in south Texas is pretty small. But having northeast/mid-Atlantic stuff available would be great.
