Winter in the northwest.

Winter weather and threats of winter weather extended west of a
cold front that...at noon...reached from central Idaho across the
central coast of California.

Winter storm warnings were posted for today across the Washington
Cascades and Olympics...and the northern coastal mountains of
Oregon.

About 14 inches of snow fell since monday morning over Stevens
Pass WA...and 13 inches of snow fell at Snoqualmie Pass WA during
the past 24 hours.

As much as 4 inches of new snow fell overnight across the
mountains that lie along the northern coast of Oregon.

Advisories for snow today and tonight were posted over portions
of Oregon including the Cascades...the central coast...the
interior southwest and the Willamette Valley /above 400 feet
elevation/.

An advisory for snow today was posted over the western slopes of
the California Sierra Nevada...south of Lake Tahoe.

Four inches of new snow covered Donner Summit at 9 am.

A winter storm watch has been posted for tonight and Wednesday
over western Wyoming.

Cold winter temperatures continued across interior Alaska.  There
has been little change since the cold snap began...on January 26.
temperatures have been 15 to 20 degrees colder than normal for
early February.  No record breakers...but lows range from 30
below zero to 50 below zero.

Rainshowers...snowshowers and occasional thundershowers remained
along the northern Pacific Coast.  Rain extended from the
northern coast of California through central California...with
rain changing to snow in the mountains and extending across
northern Utah...Idaho...northwest Wyoming and western Montana.

Snow was also scattered over northeast New York State into west
central New England.  Rainshowers reached from southern
Mississippi across southern Louisiana and the upper Texas Gulf
Coast.  Light rain extended from eastern Kansas and southeast
Nebraska across northern and west central Missouri.

Snowfall during the 6 hours ending at noon included 1 inch at
Astoria OR and Quillayute WA.  Heavier rainfall included about
one third of an inch at New Orleans LA(.39).

High temperature records for this date broken or tied included

No complaints...but the average daily temperature at La Crosse WI

zero at both Hibbing MN and International Falls MN.

Temperatures around the nation at 2 pm CST ranged from 22 degrees
at Yellowstone WY to 78 degrees at Key West FL...Fort Myers FL
and Miami FL.

Western winter weather warnings.

Winter storm warnings were posted through the afternoon over the
northern Oregon Coast and northern Utah.

Advisories for snow today have been posted over the Washington
Cascades and Olympics...the Oregon Cascades and central coastal
mountain range...the Willamette Valley of Oregon...the southern
mountains of Utah...and the west central through the north
central mountains of Wyoming.

An advisory for snow and blowing snow tonight was posted over the
Montana mountains and passes near the Continental Divide.

>From 4 to 8 inches of snow fell overnight across the mountains of
northern and northwest Wyoming.

Overnight snowfalls across Utah included 7 to 8 inches over the
Cache Valley...6 inches at Brigham City...5 inches at Ogden...3
inches at Farmington...2 to 3 inches around the Salt Lake Valley
...about an inch in Utah County...8 inches at Heber...and 6 to 12
inches across the Wasatch Mountains.

At noon rain and snow extended over western portions of Oregon
and Washington...and the northwest corner of California.  Snow
was falling from central Nevada across the northwest third of
Utah and Wyoming.  Rain was scattered over the Virginia Coast.

Snowfall during the 6 hours ending at noon CST included 3 inches
at Ely NV and Salt Lake City UT...2 inches at Sheridan WY...and 1
inch at Quillayute WA.  Heavier rainfall during the same 6 hours
included almost one third of an inch at North Bend OR(.31).

New York City JFK Airport reached 56 degrees on Tuesday and broke
their high temperature record for the date...which was 54 degrees
in 1960.

Anchorage AK reached 23 degrees below zero this morning and set a
record low for February 7.  That record was 21 degrees below zero
in 1950.

There was slight relief from the cold in Alaska on Tuesday...
some afternoon temperatures along the Alaska Highway climbed
above 30 degrees below zero.

Today marks the 14th day of bitter cold over interior Alaska.
morning temperatures included 42 below zero at Fairbanks...48
below zero at Nenana...and 54 below zero at Bettles.

A break in the continued cold across Alaska will arrive about
next Tuesday.

Low temperature for the contiguous united states this morning was
18 below zero at Truckee CA.

Temperatures around the nation at 2 pm CST ranged from 12 degrees
at Yellowstone WY to 84 degrees at Fort Myers FL.

Thunderstorms and gusty winds.

A tornado watch has been posted until 9 PM CST over portions of
western Tennessee...southern and eastern Arkansas...northern
Mississippi...and northern Louisiana.

A severe thunderstorm watch was posted until 6 PM CST over
portions of eastern Texas.

Afternoon thunderstorms produced three quarter inch diameter hail
at Waxahachee TX and Granview TX...as well as one inch diameter
hail at Ferris TX and Peoria TX.

High wind warnings were posted for this afternoon and tonight
over the eastern slopes of the northwest mountains of Wyoming...
as well as across the upper Yellowstone Valley of Montana.

Winds gusted to 45 MPH north of Cheyenne WY...58 MPH at
Livingston MT and 62 MPH at Cody WY.

Warnings of gale force winds have been posted for today along the
northern coast of Oregon...also for this afternoon and tonight
over the coastal waters of Washington state.

Two high temperature records for February 9 were tied during the
pre dawn hours...and temperatures have been falling since then.
Lansing MI reached 53 degrees.  There was no mention of the year
in which the record was set.  South bend in reached 56 degrees
...and their record was set in 1956.

Carolina...Tennessee...Kentucky...West Virginia...northern
Virginia...Ohio...western Pennsylvania...western New York state
...eastern New York state and Vermont.  Rain reached over the
northern Pacific Coast...changing to snow in the higher
elevations and extending into the northern half of the Rockies.

Heavier rainfall during the 6 hours ending at noon included an
inch and a quarter at Quillayute WA(1.22)...also about three
quarters of an inch at Louisville KY(.71)...Tuscaloosa AL(.70)
...Meridian MS(.65) and Astoria OR(.60).

There were no reports of measurable snowfall during the same 6
hours.

The overnight low temperature for Alaska was 58 degrees below
zero at Fort Yukon...and afternoon high temperatures across
inland Alaska will reach 15 degrees below zero to 25 degrees
below zero.  Today is the fifteenth day of the cold snap...and
Monday is the earliest chance for relief from the unusually cold
temperatures.

Low temperature for the contiguous nation this morning was 12
below zero at Gunnison CO.

Temperatures around the nation at 2 PM CST ranged from 13 degrees
at Warroad MN to 84 degrees at Fort Myers FL.

Cold Alaskan air heading south

Mother nature's Christmas gift to much of the continental U.S.
was a prolonged spell of mild weather which has prevailed since
the last week of December.

Alaska...meanwhile...has been experiencing severe cold the past
couple of weeks...and a change in the weather pattern across the
northern hemisphere has that cold air in Alaska shifting toward
the forty-eight states.

Strong northerly winds have begun to usher sharply colder air
into the north central and northwestern U.S...with snow in the
Pacific Northwest.

A heavy snow warning is in effect this afternoon and tonight for
elevations above 500 feet in the coastal mountains of western
Oregon.  Snow advisories are in effect through tonight for the
Cascade Mountains and the Williamette Valley.

Snow advisories are also in effect today for Cascade Mountains
...coastal regions and southwestern interior sections of
Washington state.

Advisories for snow and blowing snow have been posted for tonight
for the mountains passes of Montana west of the Continental
Divide.

A high wind warning is in effect for the mountainous areas of
southeastern Wyoming where wind gusts to 60 MPH are possible this
afternoon.  A winter storm watch has been posted for Tuesday for
the Nebraska Panhandle.

The arctic cold front crossing the northwestern U.S. is expected
to bring windy conditions to southern California.

A wind advisory is in effect this afternoon and tonight for the
mountains and northern deserts of southern California.  A high
wind watch has been posted for Tuesday for the mountains and
northern deserts...while a wind advisory has been issued for
Tuesday for the southern deserts.

A frost advisory has been posted for Wednesday night for the
agricultural areas around San Diego CA.

While strong and gusty north winds were ushering cold air into
the north central U.S...strong and gusty south winds prevailed
from the southern plains to the middle Mississippi Valley.

Temperatures were in the 70s early this afternoon across the
southern plains region and the lower Mississippi Valley...and
were in the 60s as far north as Iowa.  Several cities have
already broken previous record high temperatures for the date.

Temperatures were also in the 60s in the southeastern U.S...with
70s across the Florida Peninsula.  Temperatures were warming into
the 60s and 70s in southern California and southern Arizona.

Readings were still only in the 20s this afternoon across parts
of Minnesota...Wisconsin and Michigan.

Temperatures were dropping during the daylight hours in the
northern plains region and the northern Rockies...due to the
invasion of arctic air.  At midday...Cutbank MT was reporting a
temperature of just 3 degrees above zero...and strong northerly
winds were producing a wind chill reading 39 degrees below zero.

Parts of Alaska were experiencing rapid warming as the cold air
over the state began to slide down Canada toward the U.S.  Nome
AK experienced a temperature rise of 19 degrees in twenty-one
minutes this morning...from 25 degrees below zero to 6 degrees
below zero between 811 am and 832 AM.

Temperatures remained above freezing last night over California
and southern Arizona...and from the High Plains region to the
southern and middle Atlantic Coast.

Morning lows were in the 50s in southern California and parts of
southern Arizona...and in the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas.
Morning lows in southern Florida were in the 50s and lower 60s.

Temperatures dipped into the teens and single numbers across
parts of Minnesota...Wisconsin and Michigan...and across northern
New England and upstate New York.  Subzero readings were confined
to northern Maine.

The low for the nation this morning was 5 degrees below zero at
Caribou ME.

Showers and thunderstorms produced record rains in Florida on
Sunday.  Rainfall totals of 1.22 inches at Melbourne FL and 0.84
inches at Orlando FL established new records for February 11th.

Sunday marked a record forty-seven straight days of above normal
temperatures for La Crosse WI.  Since the 27th of december
temperatures at La cross have been averaging 11 degrees above
normal.

On this date in 1899...Texas and the eastern plains experienced
their coldest morning of modern record.  The mercury dipped to
8 degress below zero at Fort Worth TX...and to 22 below zero at
Kansas City MO.  The temperature at Camp Clarke NE plunged to
47 degrees below zero to establish a state record.  In the
eastern U.S...Washington D.C. hit 15 degrees below zero...and
Charleston SC was blanketed with a record four inches of snow.

Heavy Snow in Wyoming

An invasion of arctic air has brought snow to the north central
U.S.  Snow extended from the northern and central Rockies to the
central High Plains early this afternoon.

Heavy snow fell across Wyoming late Monday and early today.
Heavier snowfall totals included 15 inches at Big Horn...
11 inches at Rawlins...and 10 inches at Casper and Dayton.
A snow advisory remains in effect for the northwest corner of
Wyoming.

Heavy snow has also fallen across parts of western South Dakota
...with up to 9 inches reported in the Black Hills area.

A winter storm warning is in effect for the Black Hills of South Dakota.
A snow advisory is in effect for the rest of southwestern South Dakota.

A snow advisory continues in effect this afternoon for the Uintah
Basin of Utah...and for the mountains of northeastern Utah.

A snow advisory is in effect this afternoon and tonight for the
Nebraska Panhandle.

Advisories for snow and blowing snow are in effect this afternoon
and tonight for the northern and central mountains and northwest
Plateau of Colorado.

Snow was also falling across parts of the northwestern U.S...
with snow reported at elevations near sea level as far south as
northern California.  Snow was reported at Arcata and Redding
late this morning.  Newport...on the central coast of Oregon...
received two inches of snow overnight.

Strong northerly winds were ushering the arctic air into the
north central U.S.

A wind chill advisory is in effect for Missoula County of west
central Montana where strong easterly winds have been aproducing
dangerous wind chill readings...particularily in the Hellgate
Canyon east of Missoula.

Livingston MT was reporting a wind chill reading of 44 degrees
early this afternoon...and Duluth MN was reporting a wind chill
reading of 43 degrees below zero.

An advisory for blowing snow and dangerous wind chill readings
has been posted for tonight for the upper Snake Highlands of
Idaho.

Strong and gusty winds were also ushering cold air into the
southwestern U.S.

A high wind warning is in effect this afternoon and evening for
south central and extreme southern Nevada where wind gusts to
65 MPH are possible.

Wind advisories are in effect for the mountains and northern
deserts of southern California.  A wind advisory is also in
effect for the southern deserts...and the northern coastal and
valley areas of southern California.

A high wind watch has been posted for this afternoon and tonight
for the northern mountains and northern deserts of southern
California.

Snow is expected in northern Arizona by Wednesday.  A wind
advisory is in effect today and tonight for northern Arizona
...and a winter storm watch has been posted for Wednesday for the
higher elevations of northern Arizona.

Strong southerly winds prevailed ahead of the arctic cold front
...from the southern plains region and the lower Mississippi
Valley to the northeastern U.S.

A high wind warning is in effect for the Champlain Valley of
Vermont and New York state where wind gusts to 60 MPH are
possible this afternoon.  Winds gusted to 54 MPH at Burlington VT
late this morning.

Very strong winds were also over parts of Pennsylvania.  Late
this morning winds gusted to 52 MPH at Erie PA.

Light snow...developing ahead of a warm front...was over parts of
northern New England and upstate New York.

Strong westerly winds were blowing through the high mountain
passes of extreme southwest Texas.  Guadalupe Pass were reported
winds to 56 MPH early this afternoon...with gusts to 69 MPH.

Temperatures were still in the 60s and 70s early this afternoon
in the south central and southeastern U.S.  Readings were still
in the 50s and 60s in the Ohio Valley and the middle Atlantic
Coast region.

southern Atlantic Coast region to Lower Michigan.

Morning lows were in the 50s in the southwestern deserts...
and across much of the southern plains region and the lower
Mississippi Valley.  Morning lows were in the 60s in the lower
Rio Grande Valley of Texas.  Lows were in the 50s and 60s across
southern Florida.

Temperatures were still in the 50s around sunrise this morning
as far north as the middle Mississippi Valley and the lower Ohio
Valley.

Temperatures dipped into the teens and single in numbers in
northern New England...and across the northern central U.S.
subzero readings were reported in North Dakota...northern Montana
...northern Minnesota...and northern Maine.

The low for the nation this morning was 14 degrees below zero at

at Tallahassee FL...the coldest record of record for the state
of Florida.

SNOW MOVED INTO THE UPPER MIDWEST.

An advisory for snow this afternoon and evening has been posted
over the western half of Wisconsin.  After the snow ends tonight
..skies across Wisconsin will clear for the week end...
temperatures will drop...and winds will become northerly 15 and
30 MPH.  High temperatures in the single numbers and strong winds
will bring unpleasant wind chills.

A heavy snow watch was posted for tonight and Saturday across
northeast and north central Upper Michigan.  A heavy snow watch
for Saturday has been posted over northeastern Upper Michigan.

The most recent storm crossed southwestern Lower Michigan on
Thursday night...and left 6 to 10 inch snowfalls.  Grand Rapids
has had almost 17 inches of snow this month (16.7)...and near 78
inches of snow this winter (77.7).  The average total for
February is 11 inches (11.0) and 71 inches for the season (71.3).

Illinois is getting ready for north winds and much colder
temperatures across extreme northern and northeast portions of
the state during this evening.

A high wind warning has been posted for Bethel AK today.  Winds
gusted to 40 MPH during the morning.  Rising temperatures will
bring the wind chill from the 70 degrees below zero during the
early morning to 55 below zero during the afternoon.

A blizzard warning remained through this evening for St. Paul
Island AK with wind chills to 35 below zero during the afternoon.
Northwest winds 35 gusting to 45 MPH will diminish to 30 MPH
overnight...but temperatures will lower and wind chills near 35
below zero will continue.

The blizzard warning at cold Bay AK has expired.  Winds gusted to
near 50 MPH during the storm and several aircraft were stranded
at cold bay because of bad weather.

Snowfall during the 6 hours ending at noon included 3 inches at
St. Cloud MN...2 inches at Minneapolis/St Paul MN...also 1 inch
at Duluth MN...Fargo ND...Grand Forks ND...Hibbing MN...Mt
Clemens MI and Niagara Falls NY.

Heavier rainfall during the same 6 hours included an inch and a
half at Tampa FL(1.46)...an inch at Melbourne FL(.90)...three
quarters of an inch at Vero Beach FL(.74) and two thirds of an
inch at Cocoa Beach FL(.68).

At noon snow was falling over north central and eastern North
Dakota...northern Minnesota...western Upper Michigan...northern
Wisconsin...northern ohio and western New York state.  Rain and
occasional thunderstorms extended from south central New York
state across western Pennsylvania into northern West Virginia...
the central half of the Florida Peninsula...as well as scattered
along the North Carolina and South Carolina coast.

Temperatures at noon ranged from near 60 degrees over northern
New England to near 20 degrees over the northern plains...in the
40s along the eastern slopes of the northern Rockies...in the 40s
along the northern Pacific Coast...in the 60s and 70s across the
southern Pacific Coast...the 60s over the Texas Gulf Coast...and
the 80s over southeast Florida.

Low temperature for the nation this morning was 2 degrees above
zero at Gunnison CO...and Truckee CA.

Portland ME reached 55 degrees during the morning to tie their
high temperature record for February 23...set in 1984.  Then...
their temperature began to fall.

Boston MA/Logan Airport/ reached 65 degrees during the early
afternoon and broke their record high temperature for this date
..which was 63 degrees set in 1943.
