[list.aix-l] AIX and X-Windows

Ari Sadarjoen <SADARJOEN@HLERUL53.bitnet> (02/22/90)

Hello,

As a newcomer to AIX I would like to ask you, whom I consider
an expert ;-) the following questions:

What machines, other than the IBM RT/PC, does AIX run on ?

Does anyone have any experience in programming in X-Windows ?
At our department there seem to be all the manuals we need,
but sometimes too many manuals is worse than none...
So, could you advise me where to start ?

The only thing I know right know is how to start X-Windows
(% xinit), but that's just about it.

Regards,
Ari Sadarjoen.

Ari,

There are 4 different series of machines on which AIX is running:
- PS/2's with a 386 CPU
- RT's, like you are working on
- RS/6000's the last week announced new IBM workstation line
- 3090's and similar big IBM computers

To learn X-Windows you have just to peek into the 'IBM AIX X-Windows User's
Guide', this is one of the smaller manuals you'll have. To get started with
programming I use the 'Xlib Programming Manual' (ISBN 0-937175-26-9).

I am no authority on this, but, as far as I know, AIX also runs on
some flavors of PS/2 (the model 70, at least), 3090 mainframes (and
some other System/370 platforms: 43xx, ?), and the just-announced
RS/6000 workstations.

Unfortunately, the IBM X-Windows manuals do not provide any sort of
introductory tutorial. I found "Introduction to the X Window System" by
Oliver Jones (Prentice-Hall, 1989) to be EXTREMELY helpful, although
there are many errors in the example code fragments (refer to your
reference manual for the precise syntax of the subroutine calls). Ollie
Jones has taught most (if not all) of the introductory tutorials at the
last several X conferences, so he is well versed in the subject.

AIX works on the PS/2 as well. As to X-Windows, you have to define as many
pty (pseudo-terminal) devices as the number of windows you want to open
simultaneously. Use the devices command to add the pty devices. After this,
you can use the X-Windows system by adding shell or DOS windows from the
Tools menu.

May you can check out the examples of X11, do

cd /usr/lpp/X11 (I think it was that)

you should see 'samples' directory, look around in there
