[list.ibmtcp-l] Using Western Digital in 8232

Steven C Howes <SCH@BYUVM.bitnet> (02/22/90)

We are trying to get our 8232 to work. It is a new box for
us here. We are used to BTI boxes...

The facts:
  1. We have a Western Digital Ethernet board
      (EtherCard PLUS16 p/n WD8013EBT)
  2. We have an 8232 model 2... only trying to get
half of the box going just now.
  3. Someone (who prefers to remain anonymous (wasn't me))
forgot to order the IBM LAN Channel Support Program.
So, our IBM SE obtained a copy of the working diskette
for an 8232 at one of their other customers. Also, a
(Xerox?) copy of the manual that goes with it.
  4. I called Western Digital and they tell me that they do NOT
provide device drivers... that is supposed to be supplied
by the other vendor (IBM). They suggested that I contact
IBM to see if they support their (WD) card. The guy that
I talked with wasn't very helpful... he's NOT at all familiar
with the 8232. He went for help and didn't get much other
than a statement that the device driver will have to come
     from the other vendor (IBM).
  5. I think that I have the board and the software configured
properly... however, I get the following message when
I start up MTCMMAIN: "ETHTASK0 63: Invalid permanent node
address detected". The book says that this means that the
memory address strappings on the board are incorrect.
This card has no address strapping for RAM, and there is
no ROM chip on the card. I ran the WD program to set the
address to C00000 (which is what the IBM config program
     said that I need).

Now, some questions:

  1. Is there anyone out there who is running an 8232 with
     a (this?) Western Digital card?
  2. Could you please tell me what the following files contain:
     CONFIG.SYS, MTCMCONF.DAT, AUTOEXEC.BAT
  3. What settings do you have for W0 (zero wait state),
     W1 (I/O base address (default: 280)), W2 (Interrupt Request
     (default: 3))?
  4. Is there anything else that I need to know?

Thanks in advance.

the 8232 only supports the ungerman bass card. no external drivers
are used.
