[list.ibmtcp-l] 8232 Ethernet card

Steven C Howes <SCH@BYUVM.bitnet> (02/24/90)

Everyone who responded to my question about the Western Digital card
said that the ONLY card that works is an Ungermann-Bass card...

Now, the folks want to know what the part number (or whatever) is
so that they can place an order with the UB folks...

So... could someone please fill me in with:

  1. Is there more than one choice of boards?
  2. If more than one, what are the "features" of each?
  3. What is the part number (or other nomenclature) of each?
  4. What is a phone number for UB to place an order?

I went through this not too long ago:
the card for the 8232 is an ungermann-bass 2273a ethernet card
the phone no is 1 800 USE NET1 (at least, in california).
the address is 3990 freedom circle, santa clara ca 95052.
the card was 395,(less 15% for educational discount, for us).
the terms were net/30 and f.o.b. shipping point (must be in p.o.)
the fax no. is 408 970 7337.

  that should get you going......

We're using the U-B Ethernet adapter #2274A, which includes a
transceiver for thin-wire connect. It was listed at $515.

The 8232 can use either of the following Ungermann Bass cards:

2273A - requires external transceiver (which can of course be thick or thin
wire Ethernet) not included in the price.

2274A - contains internal transceiver for thin (BNC connector), or can be
used with an external transceiver - not of course included in
the price - via the usual 15pin connector.

As we are using thin wire, we decided to go for the latter.

It was a bit of a struggle to fit the adapter into place, if I recall
correctly we had to remove the plastic card guide then it went in OK.

The manual (GA27-3785-1 IBM 8232 LAN Channel Station Operator's Guide)
only mentions the 2273A. I can't remember how we discovered that the
2274A would also work. Certainly no other kind of adapter is supported,
as has already been pointed out by other contributors to the list.

Thanks VERY much to all of you who replied... I passed the info on
to those who do the ordering... hopefully, the box will get online
soon.

Please remove me from the distribution list. I thought this
was something different.

Sorry and Thanks.
