[list.british-cars] Oil pressure and such

Timothy Lyle Smith <tsmith@plains.nodak.edu> (02/26/90)

For those of you who remember I posted a while back about bad
oil pressure. Well after 3 weekends and $100 I now have 60 lbs
at speed and 25 lbs at idle, up from 25 and 5. Also I now have
to replace the exhaust system, fix the radiator, adjust the carbs,
and fiddle with the timing. This leads to various questions and
    comments.
I found out that it is possible to replace the main bearings
without removing the crankshaft, after removing the main bearing
caps there is enough clearance to slip the bearings around the
shaft pushing the old upper bearing out, after which you reverse
the procedure to get the correct bearing on the top instead of the
bottom bearing which you used to push out the old top bearing.
About the radiator, don't use on overly stiff hose for the top
radiator connection. It will eventually fatigue the tube coming
out of the radiator into leaking. This will cause radiator fluid
to spray back onto your carbs which will make your car run bad and
    smell worse.
The carbs, painfully I have come to the conclusion that I may
just have to rebuild them. I figure that if the radiator fluid
causes them to misbehave they are probably have vacuam leaks around
    the shafts.
A question about adjusting the timing. Is it possible to adjust
your timing by rotating the distributer until the car sounds best?
Oh and the exhaust, when I was taking the exhaust system off prior
to removing the engine the resonator gave out. While this made removing
the forward part of the exhaust system easier, it also makes the car
    very noisy.
Another question, is it possible to disconnect the drive shaft from
the transmission without also removing it from the differential? I
have really begun to detest having to alternatly raise each end of the
car to get the drive shaft disconnected so I can remove the engine.

Awhile back there was alot of mail about why we had/kept LBCx which
seemed to cause us mostly large bills and dirty faces( you never
touch your face but it always comes out looking like you used it to
rub the grease off of some part). This weekend I got my new Crown
Victoria catalog. It has all these nice sub-assemblies available
for my car( 74.5 MGBGT ). I went out behind the chicken coop and looked
at the remains of my orginal car and was thinking about how I could
still fix it up. Just a new front sub-assembly, sills, floor boards,
rear quarter panel, and a little inside work. I could move the
engine back in from the other car and the interior. Or mabye a new
interior. I think my uncle is going to get upset and does anybody know
an easy way to remove spot welds?
