[rec.arts.startrek.info] REPOST: Introduction to rec.arts.startrek.info

trek-info@scam.Berkeley.EDU (Jim "The Big Dweeb" Griffith) (02/09/90)

[Note - because of a recently-posted unapproved article and because many
sites have only just begun to propagate this newsgroup, I am reposting
this. The unapproved article is being dealt with - ed.]

Welcome to rec.arts.startrek.info!

The purpose of this group is to provide an uncluttered resource of
information pertaining to Star Trek. Rec.arts.startrek.info is a
moderated newsgroup, which means that all articles must be submitted
to the moderator for approval before they will be posted. Articles
appearing in this newsgroup generally fall into one of five categories :

	1) Official press releases and episode credits (generally
	   posted by Mike "Vidiot" Brown)

	2) Convention reports - summaries of Q&A sessions with guest
speakers or Richard Arnold and news of upcoming conventions.

	3) Star Trek offers from one-time or otherwise unusual sources
(including, for example, the Citibank Star Trek Visa and the
Star Trek V Marshmallow Dispenser, but not including ads
from companies such as Lincoln Enterprises).

	4) Factual articles from newspapers, magazines, or other forms
of media (as compared to articles expressing opinions, such
	   as movie reviews).

	5) First- or second-hand information, such as reliable
information on upcoming episodes or movies, "I just heard
this from Mike Okuda", etc. The key word here is
	   "reliable"...

These are very loose guidelines - if I think a submission contains
relatively accurate, potentially interesting information, I will
accept it.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSIONS :

The first and most important guideline is accurate attribution. If you
submit a transcript of a printed article, I expect the source to be
fully identified before I will accept it. I expect newspaper article
submissions to include the newspaper, date, article title, and page
number. There are several reasons for this. It helps me ensure
reasonably accurate and reliable information. It gives due credit to
those responsible for the information. Finally, in the case of printed
information, I will generally have to call the source and obtain
permission to reprint the article, and I need as much information about
the article as possible.

The second guideline is that you restrict personal comments to a
minimum when submitting information. Corrections and refutation of
rumors is welcome. Personal reactions to convention speakers are
welcome, provided that you are providing actual news while commenting.
Comments like "I'm posting this article even though I think this guy is
an idiot" are not welcome. If you post an article with personal
comments that I feel will be inflammatory, I will reject it and request
that you resubmit the article with a more neutral tone.

Send your submissions to "trek-info@scam.berkeley.edu" or
"...!ucbvax!scam!trek-info". Mail addresses permitting, I will reply,
yes or no, to all submissions. All articles appearing in this
newsgroup will be archived and made available via anonymous ftp to
scam.berkeley.edu, once there are enough articles to warrant archiving.

If you have comments, criticisms, suggestions, requests for archive
information, etc., send mail to "trek-info-request@scam.berkeley.edu"
or ...!ucbvax!scam!trek-info-request".
