[rec.arts.startrek.info] Problems with Tribune Media Services - Apparent Conclusion

trek-info@scam.Berkeley.EDU (Jim "The Big Dweeb" Griffith) (03/17/90)

Sigh. I have heard back from TMS, and their policy is not to allow reprinting
without an appropriate usage fee per article reprinted. Since I am working
in a non-profit capacity, their fee for me is only $30 per article. I cannot
comply with this, of course.

Accordingly, whenever I receive an acceptable submission quoting material
from TMS, I will post the article with appropriate references for interested
readers and replace the quoted material with the following statement:

[Note - Tribune Media Services has refused me the right to
reproduce material distributed by them, unless I pay a usage
fee per reprinted article. Since I am working in a volunteer
capacity, it is both unreasonable and impractical for me to
comply with their conditions. As such, I am not allowed to
reprint the article in question and it has been deleted - ed.]

(Both my contact and the President of TMS are aware that I am doing this.)

Please do not stop sending in any article you read from any source that
you feel is acceptable for r.a.s.i. If it is from a TMS publication or
otherwise syndicated by TMS, please tell me. Since I will be calling up
the publication to receive permission to reprint, it's not crucial that
you know for a fact that it is or isn't a TMS publication. This will
primarily affect submissions of "Marilyn Beck's Grapevine".
