XPriority: ENHANCEMENT
X
XFix:	From rn, say "| patch -p -N -d DIR", where DIR is your Star Trek
X	directory. Outside of rn, say "cd DIR; patch -p -N <thisarticle".
X	If you don't have the patch program, apply the following by hand,
X	or get patch (version 2.0, patch level 9 or later).
X
X	If patch indicates that patchlevel is the wrong version, you may need
X	to apply one or more previous patches, or the patch may already
X	have been applied. See the stlevel file to find out what has or
X	has not been applied. In any event, don't continue with the patch.
X
X	After the patches are installed you can enter 'make'. This will create
X	the printer ready files. A 'make print' will send those files to the
X	printer.
X
XNote:	Because many pages were changed in the sttng.txt1 section, your troff
X	program may not be able to handle the complete list of pages. In this
X	case you will have to print half of them at a time by manually feeding
X	the list to the make program. The README file explains how to tell
X	make which pages to print using the command line. After you print the
X	first half, do a 'rm sttng.txt1.ps' so that you can print the second
X	half.

X .IX "21st century"
X! The new Starship Enterprise and its crew set out ``to boldly go where
X! no one has gone before.'' Their first mission is to explore the
X! mystery surrounding the creation of the Farpoint station located on
X! planet Deneb IV. While trying to negotiate a friendly agreement for
X! Starfleet to use this energy-powered base, Captain Picard and his
X! crew also attempt to discover why and how the Bandi inhabitants of
X! Deneb built the station.
X! .sp .5v
X! Enroute to Farpoint, Captain Picard and his crew first meet ``Q''.
X! The mysterious and powerful being denounces the human race as
X! barbarians and challenges the crew of the Enterprise to disprove his
X! belief. If Picard and his crew are not persuasive in their arguments,
X! they will be sentenced to death.
X! .sp .5v
X! Picard defends himself and mankind by explaining that unlike ``Q'',
X! humans have learned not to prosecute and judge things they don't
X! understand. Hearing the words ``prosecute'' and ``judge,'' ``Q''
X! announces that he knows humans all too well. He leaves the Enterprise
X! in a blinding flash, stating that ``preparations'' must be made.
X! .sp .5v
X! While traveling in the battle bridge, the Enterprise begins shaking
X! as it did when ``Q'' first appeared. After a bright flash of light,
X! Picard, Data, Troi and Tasha find themselves in a 21st century
X! courtroom. When the bailiff announces the judge, the crew is
X! shocked to find ``Q'' sitting on the bench!
X! .sp .5v
X! At the trial, ``Q'' continues to denounce humans, while Picard defends
X! his race and convinces ``Q'' that the upcoming mission at Farpoint
X! will be the perfect opportunity to prove his point. ``Q'' accepts
X! the Captain's proposal but gives him only 24 hours and a reminder
X! that failing the test will mean death for the Enterprise crew.
X! .sp .5v
X! While docked at Farpoint, Picard is introduced to his new first
X! officer, Commander Riker, and the rest of the crew. As they begin
X! to investigate the station, they are startled by the seemingly magical
X! qualities of the planet where one's wish becomes reality.
X! .sp .5v
X! While the away team searches through tunnels beneath the Farpoint
X! station, an unidentified ship begins firing on the Bandi city,
X! causing damage and casualties. However, the ship turns out to be an
X! alien being that is alive and attacking the city because the people
X! of Deneb IV have captured its mate.
X! .sp .5v
X! Not only have the Bandi been holding the being against its will,
X! but they used its energy source, which converts energy into matter,
X! to create the Farpoint station and its magical qualities.
X! .sp .5v
X! After assisting the reunion of the estranged aliens, the crew
X! learns that it has passed ``Q's'' test and they head off for their
X! next mission.

X STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION \- ``Encounter at Farpoint'' \-
X--- 66,151 ----
X .IX "21st century"
X! While en route to investigate Farpoint station, a remote starbase on planet
X! Deneb IV, whose origins are somewhat mysterious,
X! the Enterprise is trapped by an entity which calls itself ``Q'',
X! and warns them to go back to where they came from.
X! Q condemns humanity as ``a dangerous savage child-race.''
X! When Picard says that Q, like so many others,
X! is too eager to prosecute and judge, Q reacts with glee and vanishes.
X! .sp .5v
X! Picard orders the Enterprise to try to outrun the force-field in front of them.
X! When that fails, he separates the saucer, putting Worf in command of it, and
X! surrenders.
X! Q then puts Picard, Troi, Yar, and Data in a 21st-century court,
X! with himself as judge.
X! .sp .5v
X! Picard is forced to admit that ``there is evidence to support the court's
X! contention that humans \f3have been\f1 savage!'', but suggests that Q use
X! the Enterprise to test whether this is presently true of humans.
X! Q agrees, and says that Farpoint will prove an excellent test.
X! .sp .5v
X! Meanwhile, Commander Riker is on Farpoint.
X! He meets with the Bandi leader, Groppler Zorn,
X! and notices some odd wish-fulfillment effects, both in Zorn's office,
X! and later, with Dr. Crusher and Wesley.
X! After we find out that Picard
X! brought home Wesley's father's body to him years ago, Geordi La Forge arrives
X! and tells Riker that the Enterprise is in orbit, without the saucer, and that
X! he should beam up immediately.
X! .sp .5v
X! Riker does so, is brought up to date on what's happened with Q.
X! As the saucer arrives,
X! Picard orders Riker to conduct a manual docking with uncharacteristic gruffness.
X! After Riker does this successfully, Picard and Riker talk, and we
X! learn that Riker has in the past refused to let his captain beam down.
X! He refuses to back down from this position, and Picard formally welcomes him.
X! .sp .5v
X! After being accosted by Q again, who gives them 24 hours more to solve the
X! mystery, Riker, Picard, and Troi meet with Zorn, who refuses to answer their
X! questions.
X! Even when Troi senses unbelievable pain and loneliness nearby, Zorn
X! refuses to say what's going on, and threatens a Ferengi alliance.
X! .sp .5v
X! Riker later meets Data on the holodeck before taking him on an away team, and
X! though puzzled by him, quickly befriends the android.
X! They meet Wesley, who chooses just the wrong moment to fall into the lake,
X! as he meets Picard shortly afterward.
X! Riker takes down his away team, which splits into two groups:
X! Riker and Data investigate the surface of the station, and Geordi, Yar, and Troi
X! investigate the tunnels below it.
X! Troi again senses pain, even stronger this time, and the teams reunite.
X! .sp .5v
X! While Beverly reports to Picard, Picard invites Wes to sit in his chair for a
X! few moments.
X! Wes shows an uncanny knowledge of starship operations, but succeeds only in
X! angering Picard and being ordered off the bridge,
X! just as an unidentified vessel approaches.
X! It scans the Enterprise, and then fires on the old
X! Bandi city that's next to Farpoint.
X! Yar, Troi and Geordi beam up, as Riker and
X! Data go exploring on the outskirts of that same city.
X! .sp .5v
X! Picard, left with what he sees as no other choice, orders that phasers be locked
X! on the other ship.
X! As he does so, Q appears and gloats.
X! Picard, refusing to fire, then tries to move the Enterprise between
X! the city and the ship, but finds that Q has locked the controls.
X! He orders Riker and Data to kidnap Zorn and
X! bring him aboard for some answers, but a different transporter beam takes Zorn
X! away just as they arrive at his office.
X! .sp .5v
X! Riker, at Q's urging, takes an away party over to the other ship, where they
X! find Zorn and free him.
X! Troi then realizes that she's only sensing one alien presence\-the
X! ship itself is alive!
X! Picard finishes piecing together the puzzle,
X! reasoning that both the ship and Farpoint station are alive, and that
X! the Bandi captured Farpoint station, feeding it only enough to keep it alive.
X! They rig an energy beam and deliver Farpoint enough energy to free itself, and
X! it rejoins its mate.
X! Passing Q's test, Picard orders Q off the ship.
X! Q leaves, but not without hinting that he will return again.
X! The Enterprise heads out into the unknown.

X! The game involves surviving a confrontation with fanged, humanoid

X!

X! He is doing well, and is becoming good friends with Mordock.

X! Dr. Crusher realizes that the alleged cure is
X! nothing more than a narcotic...and that the Ornarans are a race of drug
X! addicts!
X!
X! Apparently, the Brekkians have neglected to inform the Ornarans that the
X! plague is not fatal and have instead allowed the Ornarans to become addicted
X! to a bogus cure.
X!
X! Picard, citing the Prime Directive, refuses to inform the Ornarans that the

X! Instead, he cleverly turns

X! Using the power of both transporters, Yar manages to beam over the ship's

X! She then manages to save four of the ship's six inhabitants.
X! Strangely, the four do not exhibit any sadness
X! over their comrades, but insist on seeing their cargo.
X!
X! When they see it, it becomes clear that there are two factions here,
X! each insisting the cargo belongs to them.
X! They fight, using their own natural electric charge (``a difficult
X! weapon to confiscate'', as Yar observes) until broken up by Security.
X! Picard meets with all four, where the two Ornarans, T'Jon and Romas, say
X! that the cargo, a shipment of Felissium, is a medicine for a plague on Ornara.
X! The two Brekkians, Sobi and Langor, acknowledge this, but claim they
X! can't simply give it away without being paid for it.
X!
X! Beverly examines all four, and discovers that although T'Jon and Romas show many
X! symptoms of a disease, she can't find any cause.
X! When Picard manages to convince Sobi and Langor to at least give T'Jon
X! and Romas enough Felissium for
X! their own personal needs, she finds the answer she was looking for:
X! it used to be a medicine, but it cured the plague two hundred years ago,
X! shortly after it was first used.
X! Now, it is merely a very addictive narcotic.
X!
X! Upon further investigation, Picard discovers that the Brekkians know that
X! Felissium is no more than a drug, but the Ornarans do not.
X! Furthermore, this
X! relationship, with Felissium being Brekka's only industry, is long-standing, and
X! Picard cannot change it without breaking the Prime Directive.
X! He allows the Brekkians their ``change of heart'' when they decide
X! simply to give the Ornarans this shipment,
X! but invokes the Prime Directive again and refuses to repair the
X! Ornarans' two remaining ships, thus condemning the two planets to temporary

X! While traveling to Sarona Eight for shore leave, the Enterprise crew

X! Shortly thereafter, the ship receives a distress signal from Vandor Four,
X! where Dr. Paul Manheim has been conducting experiments in non-linear time.
X!
X! After rescuing Dr. Manheim and his wife Jenice, who turns out to be Picard's
X! first love, the crew learns that Manheim's experiment not only caused the
X! time distortion they experienced, but it cracked a window into a new
X! dimension.
X! As a result, Manheim's days are numbered, since his neuro-chemistry has been
X! damaged from floating between two dimensions.
X!
X! To save Manheim's life and prevent the aborted experiment from ripping
X! into the fabric of the galaxy and confusing everyone's perception of
X! reality, Picard must devise a plan to seal the hole into the other
X dimension.
X! So while Picard tries to resolve his past with Jenice and a

X! the Away Team beams down to Vandor Four to repair Manheim's mistake.

X! Shortly thereafter, they intercept an emergency automatic
X! transmission from Dr. Paul Manheim, a scientist
X! who's been working on some odd theories concerning nonlinear time.
X! Upon hearing his name, Picard reacts strangely,
X! but orders the ship to the coordinates specified in the message.
X! .sp .5v
X! With several hours remaining before arrival, Picard goes to Holodeck 3 and
X! programs it for Paris as it was twenty-two years ago, where he sits at a table
X! where he once had a rendezvous, but never showed up.
X! He quickly tires of ``this self-indulgence'' and leaves.
X! .sp .5v
X! As the Enterprise arrives at the coordinates given, they find a relay signal,
X! sending them to Vandor Four, a small planetoid orbiting a double star:
X! one a red giant, the other a pulsar.
X! As they arrive, Manheim's wife answers, and Picard freezes for an instant.
X! She turns off the force-field blocking their
X! transporters, and both Manheims are beamed aboard.
X! When Picard arrives in sickbay,
X! he gets Jenice's attention, and she instantly recognizes him.
X! .sp .5v
X! She explains that the rest of the scientific crew was killed several weeks
X! earlier in the other lab, and that Manheim's recent experiments have been
X! looking for windows to other dimensions that can be opened by changing the
X! nature of time.
X! After another experience of the Manheim effect (this time,
X! Riker, Data and Picard meet themselves in the turbolift), Riker leads an
X! away team and attempts to beam down to get Dr. Manheim's notes.
X! The beam, however, bounces,
X! and they are lucky to make it back to the Enterprise at all.
X! .sp .5v
X! After Dr. Manheim awakens, he claims to be partially trapped in another
X dimension.
X! When he hears what has happened, he insists that his experiment must have
X! a controlled shutdown, to close the rift he has opened.
X! He gives the security
X! codes to get down to the lab, and Picard sends Data down alone, as Data seems
X! the least affected by the time distortion.
X! Despite one security precaution
X! that Dr. Manheim forgot to mention, Data makes it into the lab.
X! .sp .5v

X! The middle Data successfully realizes that he is the one

X! .IX "Creighton, Ferengi ship"
X! The Enterprise is orbiting Betazed, throwing a final party to celebrate the
X! successful completion of a trade agreement.
X! Attending are many aliens, including Lwaxana Troi and, unfortunately,
X! the Ferengi DaiMon Tog and his entourage.
X! Tog approaches Lwaxana for two reasons: he thinks her telepathy could prove
X! very useful in his business dealings, and he's very attracted to her.
X! She recoils in horror, and tells him to go away.
X!
X! Lwaxana's been trying to encourage Deanna to settle down and have a family,
X! but she thinks her family is her friends on the Enterprise.
X! But, be that as it may, she and Riker both take some shore leave on Betazed,
X! as the Enterprise warps out to examine a nearby nebula.
X! This study, by the way, will be Wesley's last mission on board the Enterprise:
X! when they return to Betazed,
X! he's going to hop a shuttle to take his oral exams for entrance to the Academy.
X! As you might expect, Tog shows up and kidnaps Lwaxana,
X! who \f2accidentally\f1 joined Deanna and Will on the picnic.
X! He takes Deanna and Riker as well.
X!
X! Most of what follows can be summed up quickly.
X! Lwaxana lures Tog into a state of relaxation by...er...stroking his ears,
X! among other things.
X! Riker uses one of the other crewmember's annoyance at losing to Riker
X! in 3-D chess to con his way out of the cell,
X! and rigs the warp engines to modulate the subspace static
X! into a pattern the Enterprise will recognize.
X! By this time, the Ferengi CMO has caught on to what Lwaxana is doing,
X! and is brutally examining her with their mind-probe.
X! The Enterprise, having returned to Betazed after their study
X! (and, by the way, the nebula was giving off interference,
X! cutting their communications off) and discovered what happened,
X! catch on to Riker's subspace static, but as a result of staying behind to help,
X! Wesley misses the shuttle\-and thus, his chance at the Academy this year.
X!
X! They eventually find the Ferengi ship Creighton, but things have changed
X! by the time they arrive.
X! Lwaxana has made a deal for Deanna and Will's safety;
X! if Tog lets them go, she'll remain behind willingly.
X! Deanna and Will return, and Picard,
X! by pretending to be a jealous lover of Lwaxana's, scares Tog into
X! giving Lwaxana back.
X! All is well.
X! Finally, saying that ``although the Academy must wait for you,
X! I can no longer in good conscience make you wait for the Academy,''
X! Picard gives Wesley a field promotion to full Ensign, complete with
X! all its rights and responsibilities (like a nice red uniform).

X+ \h'\w'PANEL: 'u'Rick Sternbach, Mike Okuda
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ Rick Sternbach is the Senior Illustrator.
X+ Mike Okuda is the Graphic Designer.
X+ Both have now \f2acquired\f1 additional titles (an upgrade if you will.
X+ Both are now known as <Old Title>/Technical Consultant.
X+ Well, \f3somebody\f1 has to tell them how Warp Engines work!!
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ In reference to the above, scripts will now come with lines like the following:
X+ .br
X+ .ti +.5i
X+ Geordi has to fix the warp engines by using the <Tech>.
X+ .br
X+ This is a signal for Rick or Mike to fill in the word
X+ with something...well...techie.
X+ The actual example they used came from the \f2Captain's Holiday\f1 episode.
X+ The writers needed some gizmo that would provide
X+ a motive for some scientist from the 27th century to come to the
X+ 24th century via the 22th century.
X+ Something \f3reallt\f1 big.
X+ Blowing up a planet wasn't big enough.
X+ Well, we all know what eventually came out of this...
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ To provide a source for such techie gadgets, they made up 3 lists.
X+ Call them A, B, and C.
X+ List A and B had adjectives and C had nouns.
X+ Put them together and you'll have a phrase of the form:
X+ .br
X+ .ti +.5i
X+ <Adjective> <Adjective> <Noun>
X+ .br
X+ Gee, with this toy the writers could come up with phrases like:
X+ ``Subspace Compression Modulator''.
X+ Neat, huh?
X+ Pick a word at random from each of the 3 lists, and you'll have a *new* gadget!!
X+ Only one problem now...what do all these gadgets do?
X+ .sp .35v
X+ BTW, if you didn't know, \f2Captain's Holiday\f1 had a ``Quantum Phase
X+ Inverter''.
X+ It...uh...well...did something to stars...yeah,
X+ made them go nova...that's the ticket!! :-)
X+ (The writer's reaction: ``Is that a joke?''
X+ The Response: ``Of course it is!! Put it in the movie!!'')
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ Rick does \f3not\f1 like doing storyboards, and doesn't...even though it's
X+ in his union contract...the Production Staff have learned not to
X+ give them to him... :-)
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ Differences between Set Decoration and Props: if a character interacts
X+ with it (e.g. pick it up), it's a prop.
X+ Otherwise Set Decoration takes care of it.

X+ happens when a Ferengi is talking.
X+ No, I don't know what it is...but I'll follow up later after I've seen it!!
X+ (\f2Me\*'nage a\*` Troi\f1 has not yet been shown at the time of this writing).
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ Alternative title for \f2Me\*'nage a\*` Troi''...``This is Troi's Brain''.

X+ The canonical answer to why there are no cloaking devices on board
X+ any Federation ship.
X+ They've found that cloaking devices don't
X+ work with the geometry of the starships shape.
X+ It has to do with where the Deflector Emitters are on the hull relative
X+ to each other and does not allow for that kind of field manipulation.
X+ .bp
X+ Why did the (old) Enterprise work with its stolen one?
X+ Due to Scotty's work.
X+ However, the operation of the cloaking device
X+ blew all of the Deflector Emitters on board the starship...and

X+ Current policy at Starfleet is ``Never again...''
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ Why doesn't ST:TNG allow Federation use of cloaking technology anyway?
X+ (Well, they \f3can\f1...after all, it's only a TV show!!)
X+ The real world reason is that it's one of the facets that make the Romulans
X+ different from the Federation.
X+ Also the fact that any resultant
X+ space battles/warp maneuvers would be boring to watch.
X+ .sp .35v
X+ ``Gee, the invisible Enterprise is taking evasive action away from the
X+ bow of the invisible Romulan ship which bearing down on where the
X+ invisible Enterprise was originally.''
X+ Easy to tape, though... :-)
X+ .sp .35v
X+ Of course, invisible ships \f3do\f1 save money...you could have an entire
X+ fleet of invisible ships out there, and not have to show it.

X+ ST:TNG milestones:
X+ .lp \h'12p'\(ci 24p
X+ The 6th episode of season 4 will be the 80th episode made of ST:TNG.
X+ This is the point where they exceed the total number of episodes made
X+ for ST:TOS.
X+ .lp \h'12p'\(ci 24p
X+ The last episode of season 4 will be the 100th episode.
X+ .lp \h'12p'\(ci 24p
X+ The end of season 4 will mark Mike and Rick having the \f3longest\f1
X+ tenure with Star Trek with the exception of Gene Roddenberry
X+ and a couple of other people.
X+ Rick noted that this was a ``scary statistic''.
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ Rick has \f2acquired\f1 something that he definitely \f3didn't\f1 want.
X+ One of his jokes during ST:TNG's first season (might have said it at
X+ Baycon '88...don't remember) was the fact that he didn't want his
X+ headstone to read: ``He Worked on Star Trek''.
X+ .sp .35v
X+ During a modelling session (they were building a Form-Core model),
X+ a Foam-Core headstone appeared at his drafting lamp with the
X+ inscription: ``He Worked on Star Trek''.
X+ .sp .35v
X+ Mike's immediate reaction: ``I've no idea who did it.''
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ The Enterprise on ST:TNG is NCC-1701D. The ``D'' stands for David

X+ In full color too.
X+ Funny, since two of the dams were just pencil sketches... :-)
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ From \f2Captain's Holiday\f1, the basic design of the pack used by
X+ Picard came from \f2Robinson Crusoe on Mars\f1.
X+ Remember that one?
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ Due to cost constraints, alot of compromise has to be done between
X+ what Rick draws, and what Fabrication can do.
X+ It also means that sets have to be reused as much as possible.
X+ (OK, so this one is a \f2slight\f1 repeat from Baycon '89...).
X+ Compound curves in props is definitely \f3out\f1.
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ The fusion reactor from \f2Who Watches the Watchers\f1 reappeared in

X+ Stickers were added to the reactor...with a variety of anime jokes on them.
X+ The camera never got close enough, however...\f3sigh\f1
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ From \f2Booby Trap\f1, the original model in the holodeck was suppose
X+ to be a mockup of the actual inside of a warp engine.
X+ Time (5 days) constraints forced them to be somewhat more modest,
X+ and the sliding panels idea was ultimately used for Geordi's model.
X+ .bp
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ Many items on the drawings are referred to as \f3GNDN\f1.
X+ An example of this is the ``GNDN Engineering Tool'' which appeared on one of

X+ This is a reference to the old series (ST:TOS) where many of the
X+ pipes had \f3GNDN\f1 written on them.
X+ .sp .35v
X+ If you're wondering, \f3GNDN\f1 stands for ``\f3G\f1oes
X+ \f3N\f1owhere...\f3D\f1oes \f3N\f1othing''.
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ From \f2Who Watches the Watchers\f1: the `Snoop Scope' used by the
X+ observation post (it's by the window) is based on the video cameras
X+ used by the TMA-1 team from \f22001: A Space Odyssey\f1.
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ From \f2Hollow Pursuits\f1, the Transporter Test Object used by O'Brien
X+ to show that the transporter isn't working is actually a Navy Sonar

X+ For some reason, the ST:TNG production staff has a lot of those...
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ From \f2The Emissary\f1, K'Ehleyr's specially modified probe was a redress
X+ of a photon torpedo tube (ST:TSFS) which in turn was a redress of
X+ Spock's coffin (ST:TWOK).
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ From \f2The Schizoid Man\f1, preproduction drawings of Ira Graves' casket
X+ were shown.
X+ The drawings were credited to ``Casket Concepts'', and the `brochure'
X+ was displaying ``The Starfleet Collection''.
X+ Nobody could figure out, though, why Ira Graves needed a window...
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ A poster of Kei and Yuri actually did appear on Wesley Crusher's wall.
X+ Complete with double stick tape and everything.
X+ David Livingston came onto the set,
X+ took one look at the poster and said: ``Awww, c'mon, you're kidding!!''
X+ Needless to say, the poster came off.
X+ This close, we were \f3this\f1 close... :-) :-)
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ What \f3did\f1 appear in Wesley's quarters were fan-built reproductions of
X+ a phaser and a communicator.
X+ Well, OK, this one was kind of mentioned at Baycon '89 too...

X+ Rick: ``What do you think the memory capacity of the PADD is?''

X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ Tricorders have gotten to be very complicated props.
X+ They have a ton of LEDs in there controlled by variable potentiometers (and
X+ probably more chase circuits...they didn't say that though).
X+ They also have a working hinge so that they can really open and close.
X+ .sp .35v
X+ The original Tricorders had a spring loaded mechanism (based on some toy).
X+ When they open or closed, the hinge makes a click-click-click-click noise.
X+ With the new props, the hinges are silent, so the
X+ Sound department is dubbing the clicks back in...
X+ .lp \(bu 12p

X+ .sp .35v
X+ In a tribute to the original Trek, \f2maybe\f1 the sound effect for Dr.

X+ We'll have to see...(at the time of this writing, \f2Transfigurations\f1 has

X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ A new phaser has been designed.
X+ It's to replace the ``Dustbuster''.
X+ You get the feeling that somebody didn't like the old design? :-) :-)
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ The Medical Hypo is based on a present day inhaler.
X+ After all, you can spray the inhaler, it has removable cartridges,

X+ Of course, Yuri didn't appear in the episode itself,
X+ but the front of the ``Egg'' \f3is\f1 based on Nanmo's green eye.
X+ Nanmo is the Dirty Pair's robot...
X+ .sp .35v
X+ The ``Egg'' itself was based on the Virus Containment Unit from \f2The Child\f1.
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ The Shuttle Pod has been used extensively in ST:TNG (if you hadn't noticed :-)).
X+ There has been some lobbying from the Art Department

X+ .sp .35v
X+ The Shuttle Pod is mounted on wheels, so it is easy to move.
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ From BAYCON '89 and \f2Time Squared\f1, the shuttle was named after a

X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ From \f2Sins of the Fathers\f1, the shot where there is a data mismatch

X+ I wonder why? :-)
X+ .sp .35v
X+ The actual data was all random numbers...
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ Often, Mike has to design alien type faces.
X+ When doing so, he never assigns an 'A'=, 'B'= match up to his characters.
X+ He's found that if he does so, then from a distance,
X+ his alien typeface looks just like English.
X+ Even he doesn't know what his letters mean, and he prefers it that way...
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ From \f2The High Ground\f1, Mike had to design YAAT (Yet Another Alien Typeface)
X+ for the police display shown on the Enterprise.
X+ When he was done, he realized that he had designed an alien MacIntosh,
X+ complete with windows and a cursor symbol in the middle...
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ The Romulan symbol is a nasty looking bird of prey which is clasping
X+ two glowing spheres in its claws.
X+ The spheres are supposed to represent
X+ the two central planets of the Romulan Empire.
X+ The logo was actually designed by an Bay Area artist named Monty Thrasher.
X+ Mike tries to put the logo in wherever a Romulan appears...
X+ .lp \(bu 12p
X+ If the Enterprise is looking a bit different now, it's because a new and more
