X! humans have learned not to prosecute and judge things they don't

X! When Picard says that Q, like so many others,
X! is too eager to prosecute and judge, Q reacts with glee and vanishes.

X! When that fails, he separates the saucer, putting Worf in command of it, and

X! Q then puts Picard, Troi, Yar, and Data in a 21st-century court,

X! Picard is forced to admit that ``there is evidence to support the court's
X! contention that humans \f3have been\f1 savage!'', but suggests that Q use
X! the Enterprise to test whether this is presently true of humans.

X! Meanwhile, Commander Riker is on Farpoint.
X! He meets with the Bandi leader, Groppler Zorn,
X! and notices some odd wish-fulfillment effects, both in Zorn's office,

X! brought home Wesley's father's body to him years ago, Geordi La Forge arrives
X! and tells Riker that the Enterprise is in orbit, without the saucer, and that
X! he should beam up immediately.

X! Picard orders Riker to conduct a manual docking with uncharacteristic gruffness.
X! After Riker does this successfully, Picard and Riker talk, and we

X! He refuses to back down from this position, and Picard formally welcomes him.

X! After being accosted by Q again, who gives them 24 hours more to solve the
X! mystery, Riker, Picard, and Troi meet with Zorn, who refuses to answer their

X! Even when Troi senses unbelievable pain and loneliness nearby, Zorn

X! Riker later meets Data on the holodeck before taking him on an away team, and
X! though puzzled by him, quickly befriends the android.
X! They meet Wesley, who chooses just the wrong moment to fall into the lake,

X! Riker and Data investigate the surface of the station, and Geordi, Yar, and Troi
X! investigate the tunnels below it.

X! Wes shows an uncanny knowledge of starship operations, but succeeds only in

X! Bandi city that's next to Farpoint.
X! Yar, Troi and Geordi beam up, as Riker and
X! Data go exploring on the outskirts of that same city.

X! on the other ship.
X! As he does so, Q appears and gloats.
X! Picard, refusing to fire, then tries to move the Enterprise between

X! bring him aboard for some answers, but a different transporter beam takes Zorn
X! away just as they arrive at his office.

X! the Bandi captured Farpoint station, feeding it only enough to keep it alive.

X! several frozen cadavers and \f2no survivors\f1.

X! Unknowingly, Geordi energizes back aboard the Enterprise carrying a
X! contagious, deadly contaminant that begins to infect the entire Starfleet
X! crew, making them feel and act as if they were intoxicated and mentally

X! While Dr. Crusher searches for an antidote, chaos erupts when Wesley and
X! Assistant Chief Engineer Shimoda take control of the ship.

X! Finally, Lieutenant Commander Data and Chief Engineer MacDougal, fighting

X! Wesley uses a Picard-Voice-Simulator he's cooked up and seizes control of
X! Engineering, appointing himself Acting Captain.

X! Meanwhile, Data has found the records of the original Enterprise, and has sent
X! the cure down to Bev.
X! Unfortunately, the virus has mutated, and the old cure doesn't work.
X! Bev, already infected, starts working on a new formula.
X! Then, as if things couldn't get any worse, the star collapses, then explodes,
X! sending a huge chunk of star straight at the Enterprise.
X! Even when Chief Engineer MacDougal gets into main Engineering

X! He claims to act like a lens, focusing the power of thought, which brought them

X! However, there is no choice; he must try to get them back.

X! Before the attempt, he talks to Picard alone, about Wesley.
X! It seems that Wes has the potential to become a Mozart of engineering,

X! absorb the phaser fire (and the energy of the Ferengi whips as well).
X! The ``Portal'' to the Tkon empire appears and demands to know why

X! He has been sleeping for many hundreds of millenia and does not know of his

X! Parliament. The Captain, still under the being's influence, announces that in
X! its struggle to return home, the entity accidentally disabled the ship,
X! killing Singh and invading Lt. Worf, Dr. Crusher and himself. The being,
X! now in full control of Captain Picard's behavior, announces Picard's
X! resignation. Despite the crew's objections and their determination to fight
X! the force that seems to be taking over Picard's mind, their efforts are in
X! vain. The Captain is gone.

X! Riker takes command of the Enterprise and orders the ship to proceed towards
X! Parliament. By this time, the real Captain (in the form of energy) manages to
X! move into the transporter relays and materializes back aboard the Enterprise.

X! son during the battle of Maxia, inflicts great pain on Picard and forces
X! him to think about the battle horrors. In an attempt to tarnish Picard's
X! reputation, Bok also tampers with the Stargazer records to make it appear
X! as if the Captain fired on an innocent Ferengi vessel in the Maxia skirmish.

X! While Data, Riker and La Forge try to absolve the Captain, Wesley discovers
X! patterns in Captain Picard's brain scan that match the low intensity
X! transmissions being picked up by the Ferengi ship.

X! Commander Riker soon discovers the illegal, mind-altering device but not before
X! the Captain has beamed over to the Stargazer to relive the battle. This time,
X! however, Picard thinks the enemy is the Enterprise and he tries to perform his
X! famous ``Picard Maneuver'' with which Starfleet won the battle of Maxia.

X! Before tragedy strikes, Data devises a strategy to seize the Stargazer with
X! the Enterprise's tractor beam and thereby thwart the supposedly unbeatable
X! maneuver. In the meantime, the Captain, fighting the effects of the device,
X! is convinced by Riker to use his phaser to destroy the mind altering mechanism.
X! By this time Bok has been taken into custody by his first officer since the
X! use of a mind altering device violates Ferengi law.

X! and gets quite caught up in his memories doing so.
X! After the Stargazer is declared safe, Picard beams over.

X! we see in his chest a pulsing silver sphere.
X! As it glows more strongly, Picard's headache increases in strength.

X! Later, Data presents some worrying evidence to Riker.
X! Picard's personal log from the Stargazer seems to indicate that he fired on
X! the Ferengi vessel without provocation,
X! and Riker must immediately mention it to Starfleet Command,

X! The lifeform reproduces, then manages to shrug off the quarantine field,
X! and \f2then\f1 tries to communicate with the ship, proving itself to
X! be not only life, but intelligent life.

X! Picard discovers that Benson and Mandl occasionally saw strange patterns in the
X! sand down on Velara, which were ignored, but were clearly in hindsight attempts
X! to communicate.
X! The lifeform, which contains all the necessary elements to be
X! a living computer, divides again and again, until it becomes formidable.
X! Angry over nearly being killed by the terraformers,
X! it declares war on the Enterprise.

X! They try to beam it back, with no success, and then the lifeform gains control
X! over the Enterprise computer.
X! Realizing that the creature is photosensitive,
X! Riker kills the lights in the lab, rendering it helpless.
X! It begs for mercy,
X! and the Enterprise beams it home and declares Velara III off-limits.

X! of the Aldean sterility problem. Meanwhile, Wesley uncovers the key

X! from radiation poisoning, caused by the protective shield, which

X! permitted, appears almost immediately on the bridge with Radue.
X! The two invite them to come to Aldea, leave, and Riker, Troi,

X! Suddenly, a strong scanner hits the ship, focusing on the children.
X! Down on the planet,
X! Radue tells the away team that the Aldean race is dying and cannot have

X! He proposes untold knowledge and assistance in

X! The three immediately refuse, and are sent back,
X! at which point Wesley and six other children vanish.

X! The children are placed with families according to their special talents:
X! Harry, who likes art (but hates the dreaded Calculus), is placed with sculptors,

X! Up on the ship, Picard reassures the parents of the children that
X! the Enterprise will not leave without the children.
X! Meanwhile, the crew discovers that the Aldean shield
X! (through which Enterprise transporters cannot penetrate)
X! has random fluctuations, through which they might be able to send someone.

X! Picard and Bev go down to the planet
X! to ``negotiate'' for ``proper compensation''.
X! While there, Bev slips Wesley a med-scanner, which he quickly uses on
X! Duana and returns to Beverly.
X! After again insisting on the return of the
X! children, the two are sent back, and the ship is hit by a bolt from Aldea
X! which sends them three days away at warp 9.

X! As even the younger children start getting lonely and homesick, Beverly finds
X! the reason for the Aldeans' troubles:

X! ozone layer, giving them a kind of radiation poisoning.
X! Wesley leads the children in passive resistance,

X! of the holes in the shield and neutralize it.

X! In the mist of the investigation, a young man named Jake Kurland,
X! distraught over not qualifying for the Academy entrance exam, steals a
X! shuttlecraft and heads into space. When he discovers that the craft has
X! a major malfunction, Jake panics and begins to plummet toward certain
X! death. However, Picard keeps cool and manages to help the teen make a
X! safe return to the ship, while Remmick watches with interest.

X! After an exhaustive study of Picard's performance record, Remmick tells
X! Quinn that he has failed to find any flaws in the captain's command.
X! Quinn then informs Picard that he has proven himself worthy of the
X! prestigious post of Commandant of the Starfleet Academy and may be
X! promoted to the rank of admiral.

X! Despite Wesley's obvious intelligence and promise, he is not selected for
X! the Academy. Although clearly disappointed, the youngster's spirits are
X! lifted after a pep talk by Picard, who has decided to remain with the
X! Enterprise rather than accept Quinn's offer.

X! The Enterprise is orbiting Relva 7, where Wesley is to take his entrance exams

X! In a surprise, Picard is visited by his old friend, Admiral Gregory Quinn.

X! serious and is accompanied by his aide, Lt. Commander Dexter Remmick, from the
X! Inspector General's office, whose job is to find out exactly ``what is wrong on
X! this ship.''

X! Remmick starts his questioning with Riker, asking him about Picard.
X! Riker defends Picard, fiercely.
X! Meanwhile, Wes is testing with his competitors:
X! Oliana Mirren, a human, T'Shanik of Vulcan, and Mordock, a Benzite.
X! He is doing well, and is becoming good friends with Mordock.

X! Remmick continues grilling the crew.
X! He discusses the ``Traveler'' incident with Geordi,
X! and the more recent Stargazer incident with Troi, calling it a mental lapse.
X! Later, Remmick is on the bridge when a crisis comes up:

X! whom he just beat to become the Enterprise's candidate for
X! the Academy, steals a shuttle in embarrassment,
X! and the shuttle becomes unbalanced, sending Jake towards Relva.

X! Wes, down on Relva again, passes a crucial test of knowing other species'
X! habits, and Remmick continues his grilling.
X! This time, he questions Worf about the virus from ``The Naked Now'',
X! then Beverly about her personal feelings
X! about Picard (which she dismisses as being irrelevant and none of his business),
X! and finally Picard himself, about having broken the Prime Directive in rescuing
X! Wesley from the Edo.
X! Picard finally decides enough is enough and confronts
X! Quinn, who asks Remmick to deliver his final report.

X! Remmick is abashed to admit that he could not find anything wrong with the ship,
X! or with Captain Picard, and Quinn dismisses him to tell Picard the real reason
X! for this investigation.
X! Quinn believes (with some others) that there's something very wrong with
X! Starfleet, and he wants Picard close to him.
X! He wants to promote Picard to Admiral and make him the head
X! of Starfleet Academy.
X! Picard, surprised, says he'll answer by that night.
X! Meanwhile, Wes takes his psych test and successfully faces his greatest fear:
X! having to to make a decision where someone could die.

X! Despite his high score, however, Wesley loses the coveted Academy place to

X! Depressed, he returns to the Enterprise, where Picard comforts him,

X! capture them. Then, just as their disabled ship is about to blow up,
X! the Klingons are rescued by the Enterprise.

X! Unaware of the Klingon's true intentions, Captain Picard instructs Worf
X! to show the Klingon comrades around the ship. During the tour, the
X! fugitives attempt to enlist Worf in their cause. Meanwhile a Klingon
X! vessel approaches, and its captain informs Picard of the fugitive's
X! crimes and demands their extradition. Before Picard can deliver them,
X! one criminal escapes and the other is killed. The surviving Klingon takes
X! over the engineering room and threatens to destroy the Enterprise.

X! Trying to save the ship and its crew, Worf approaches the desperate
X! Klingon who pleads with Worf to join him in his plan to escape with the
X! battle section of the ship. Torn between his new life and his Klingon
X! warrior instincts, Worf explains that the sign of the true warrior is
X! not without \- but within. The Klingon lunges at Worf, who fires,
X! killing the fugitive with a phaser blast.

X! Impressed by Worf's skills, the Klingon Captain offers Worf a position
X! under his command. After politely telling the Klingon captain he'll
X! think about it, Worf assures Picard that he plans to remain with the
X! Enterprise.

X! After some exploration, they find three Klingons:

X! The three Klingons go to sickbay, where they are met by Picard and Worf.
X! They claim to have been passengers on the vessel, when
X! they were attacked by Ferengi and took control (with the captain's permission)

X! When pressed, they claim fatigue and ask to have
X! time to rest.
X! In their quarters, Korris and Konmel goad Worf to anger ``only
X! to see if it is still possible.''

X! After Kunivas dies of his injuries and the two remaining Klingons (plus Worf)
X! join in a death-ritual, Worf tells them of his origins:
X! his parents were killed by Romulans on the Khitomer outpost,
X! where he was rescued by a human Starfleet officer and raised as his son.
X! The two appeal to Worf's heritage and tell him what really happened:
X! they are dissidents, opposed to the Federation-Klingon peace,
X! and the ship they destroyed was a Klingon cruiser sent to bring them back.
X! They ask Worf for a tour, just as the bridge detects another ship coming
X! into the area.
X!
X! The other ship contains a Klingon captain, K'nera, demanding the return of
X! Korris and the others as criminals.
X! Yar takes them into custody, despite their appeal to Worf to join them.
X! Locked in their cell, however, they jury-rig a disruptor and break out,
X! killing one of the guards (though Konmel is also killed in the attempt).
X! Korris goes to Main Engineering and aims a phaser at
X! close range at the dilithium crystal chamber.
X! One shot at that distance, and he would destroy the Enterprise easily.
X! He insists he will speak only to Worf,
X! who immediately leaves for Engineering himself.
X!
X! Upon arrival, Worf attempts to convince Korris that ``the true test of a
X! warrior is not without\-it is within!'', and fails.
X! Korris cannot believe
X! Worf retains his loyalty to Starfleet and goads Worf into killing him.
X! K'nera hears this news, and invites Worf to join his crew once his tour on the
X! Enterprise is over.

X! Although Data is able to free Riker, the away team is unable to locate

X! Meanwhile, the Enterprise comes under attack by an
X! invisible enemy, which Lieutenant La Forge desperately fights to contain.
X! Until the ship can defend itself from the attacker, La Forge cannot beam up
X! the crew members on Minos.

X! Back on the planet, Data locates Picard and Crusher.
X! They discover that the
X! attacks are coming from a computer-generated weaponry system, which has
X! gone out of control and destroyed the civilization that created it.
X! Fortunately, they are able to turn the system off in time so save the
X! planet...and themselves.

X! On board the Enterprise, La Forge is able to destroy the invisible enemy and
X! beam Picard, Crusher, Riker, Data and Yar aboard.

X! Riker, Yar and Data do so.

X! Riker, on the surface, sees an image of the Drake's captain, his old friend
X! Paul Rice, but is quickly informed by the Enterprise that there are no life
X! signs apart from himself in the area.
X! He tricks ``Rice'' into revealing it is only an image.
X! It then turns itself into a small hovering device, and encases Riker in a
X! force-field, and it is then destroyed by Yar.

X! Picard and Beverly beam down to help, and Picard leaves Geordi in command.
X! Unfortunately, as Data begins work on removing the force-field, a second device
X! appears and fires on the team.
X! Picard and Bev run for cover, and end up falling

X! combine their efforts to destroy this second device, and Data then frees Riker.

X! device appears in orbit with them and fires on the Enterprise.

X! comes up to the bridge, demanding that Geordi break orbit and suggesting that
X! he relinquish command to Logan.
X! Geordi refuses and sends Logan back.

X! A third device appears on the surface, this time equipped with a deflector
X! shield, where all three people still on the surface are required to deal
X! with it.
X! Back in space, Worf and Lt. Solis at the helm try to anticipate the
X! enemy's next move, and fire a spread of phasers and photon torpedoes at that

X! The display is impressive, but a clean miss.
X! After being buffeted by several more shots, Geordi calls Logan up to the bridge.

X! When Logan arrives, Geordi breaks orbit and puts Logan in command...of the
X! \f3saucer section\f1.
X! The ship separates, and the stardrive section returns to fight.
X! Down on the surface, Picard finds a console tracking the away team,
X! then accidentally activates the salesman, who implies that this system is what
X! destroyed the Minosians.
X! As the away team finds Picard and Beverly, Picard
X! manages to shut the system down by convincing it it's made a sale, dispersing
X! the final unit on the surface.

X! it used to be a medicine, but it cured the plague two hundred years ago,

X! Upon further investigation, Picard discovers that the Brekkians know that
X! Felissium is no more than a drug, but the Ornarans do not.

X! relationship, with Felissium being Brekka's only industry, is long-standing, and
X! Picard cannot change it without breaking the Prime Directive.
X! He allows the Brekkians their ``change of heart'' when they decide
X! simply to give the Ornarans this shipment,
X! but invokes the Prime Directive again and refuses to repair the
X! Ornarans' two remaining ships, thus condemning the two planets to temporary

X! The Enterprise is orbiting Betazed, throwing a final party to celebrate the
X! successful completion of a trade agreement.
X! Attending are many aliens, including Lwaxana Troi and, unfortunately,
X! the Ferengi DaiMon Tog and his entourage.
X! Tog approaches Lwaxana for two reasons: he thinks her telepathy could prove
X! very useful in his business dealings, and he's very attracted to her.
X! She recoils in horror, and tells him to go away.
X!
X! Lwaxana's been trying to encourage Deanna to settle down and have a family,
X! but she thinks her family is her friends on the Enterprise.
X! But, be that as it may, she and Riker both take some shore leave on Betazed,
X! as the Enterprise warps out to examine a nearby nebula.
X! This study, by the way, will be Wesley's last mission on board the Enterprise:
X! when they return to Betazed,
X! he's going to hop a shuttle to take his oral exams for entrance to the Academy.
X! As you might expect, Tog shows up and kidnaps Lwaxana,
X! who \f2accidentally\f1 joined Deanna and Will on the picnic.
X! He takes Deanna and Riker as well.
X!
X! Most of what follows can be summed up quickly.
X! Lwaxana lures Tog into a state of relaxation by...er...stroking his ears,
X! among other things.
X! Riker uses one of the other crewmember's annoyance at losing to Riker
X! in 3-D chess to con his way out of the cell,
X! and rigs the warp engines to modulate the subspace static
X! into a pattern the Enterprise will recognize.
X! By this time, the Ferengi CMO has caught on to what Lwaxana is doing,
X! and is brutally examining her with their mind-probe.
X! The Enterprise, having returned to Betazed after their study
X! (and, by the way, the nebula was giving off interference,
X! cutting their communications off) and discovered what happened,
X! catch on to Riker's subspace static, but as a result of staying behind to help,
X! Wesley misses the shuttle\-and thus, his chance at the Academy this year.
X!
X! They eventually find the Ferengi ship Creighton, but things have changed
X! by the time they arrive.
X! Lwaxana has made a deal for Deanna and Will's safety;
X! if Tog lets them go, she'll remain behind willingly.
X! Deanna and Will return, and Picard,
X! by pretending to be a jealous lover of Lwaxana's, scares Tog into
X! giving Lwaxana back.
X! All is well.
X! Finally, saying that ``although the Academy must wait for you,
X! I can no longer in good conscience make you wait for the Academy,''
X! Picard gives Wesley a field promotion to full Ensign, complete with
X! all its rights and responsibilities (like a nice red uniform).
